2023 Carnegie Project for Educational Doctorate Award Recognizes Exemplary Programs

Frostburg State University’s doctorate in Educational Leadership was one of just four member institutions to be selected as a finalist for the 2023 Carnegie Project for Educational Doctorate (CPED) Program of the Year award. The award is given to an institution whose programming demonstrates excellence, innovation, impact and alignment with the CPED Framework to promote continuous improvement.

FSU’s Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership is a fully online program that utilizes a collaborative cohort model rooted in practical experiences, exploration of case studies, problem-based learning activities and an integrated practicum. New cohorts are admitted each January and May.

“Over the past year, our program faculty have accepted several invitations to share aspects of our unique and engaging program with a national audience,” said Heather Hurst, Ph.D., Program Director for the Ed.D. in Educational Leadership. “Additionally, our students are accomplishing great work, especially in disrupting systemic educational inequities, in their daily practice as educational leaders.”

Frostburg’s program offers specializations in PK12 leadership, higher education leadership, adult and professional learning facilitation and leadership in health professions education. This degree will equip graduates of the program with the skills necessary to assume a leadership role as an administrator, supervisor, master teacher, policy specialist or as a leader in another diverse career.

The CPED award committee acknowledged Frostburg’s dedication to enhancing its Ed.D. program in education leadership. “It was obvious that FSU’s faculty deliberated at length on ways to ground the program as both field-based and solution-focused.”

“I am honored that CPED’s award committee recognized our faculty’s commitment to continuous programmatic improvement, particularly our innovative consultancy-based practicum, in which students work in teams to solve a real problem faced by a community partner organization,” said Dr. Hurst.
