Twenty exceptional high school students from Maryland and Pennsylvania will participate in the 2023 Frostburg State University STEM Summit on the FSU campus June 20-23. During this four-day, three-night event, the students will be presented with a scientific problem relating to a hypothetical deep space mission that they must make recommendations about.

After this initial briefing and over the course of three days, they will receive instruction in biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering, geography and physics taught by FSU faculty members and undergraduate teaching assistants. On the final day, teams of STEM students will present their recommendations for the mission to judges from NASA, Northrop Grumman and Villanova University.

The purpose of the 2023 FSU STEM Summit is to develop more interest among young people in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) as an academic area of interest and as a profession. Planning is currently underway for the 2024 FSU STEM Summit.

Funding for this year’s project was provided by the Appalachian Regional Commission, Northrop Grumman and the Frostburg State University Foundation.
