#1 Kutztown Defeats Field Hockey on Senior Day

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State field hockey team fell to top-ranked Kutztown by an 8-1 final on Saturday.

On a beautiful Fall day, FSU honored four seniors on the day in Hannah Haberkorn, Paige Leitzel, Aubree Dorsey and Zoe Barnes.

Kutztown would get on the board early, scoring of a nice pass and finish in the third minute to go up 1-0 early. The Bobcats then enjoyed a four-minute spell in which they generated a few attacking chances. After initially getting a penalty corner that wouldn't prodcue a shot, Leitzel drew a kick save from keeper Tess Adolf before another corner was awarded. Junior Mikyla Rineer sent the ball up to Leitzel, who fired towards net but was again turned away by Adolf. The Golden Bears would establish themselves once again for the remainder of the period, drawing a pair of saves from Barnes before netting their second five minutes from the break.

KU came out with a flurry of chances to start the second, as Barnes made a trio of saves within the first five minutes to keep the deficit at two. As both teams struggled to create many chances, it would be Kutztown to add only one goal in the quarter, with Julia Traynor scoring her second of the day for a 3-0 halftime score.

Maintaining their momentum, the Golden Bears added a goal in the first minute of the third on a penalty stroke put into the roof of the net by Olivia Kirkpatrick. The Bobcats had a chance of their own just 30 seconds later after winning a corner, but junior Bri Macchia's effort was blocked. KU would get off six more shot attempts and three corners, but a combination of Barnes and some stout defending allowed FSU to only surrender the one goal.

The final quarter would see Kutztown take full control, scoring three goals in 10 minutes, as Barnes added four saves to her total. With the score standing at 7-0, Leitzel provided the highlight of the game, netting her senior day goal after working a shot attempt from the top of the arc that deflected into the cage. The Golden Bears responded one final time, netting with 90 seconds on the clock for the 8-1 final.

KU held a 24-4 advantage in shots, as Barnes finished with 13 saves, her second-most of the season.

With the loss the Bobcats are now 3-13, while Kutztown improves to 16-0. Frostburg plays again Monday, October 27 when they host Maryville at noon. For more information visit frostburgsports.com.
