Baseball Falls to Goldey-Beacom to Conclude Opening Weekend

CARY, NC – The Frostburg State Baseball team concluded their opening weekend down south, dropping their final two games 9-2 and 8-3 to Goldey Beacom.

Senior Jacob McDonald started from the mound for Frostburg on defensive, tossing a perfect first inning with a 1-2-3 outcome.  The Bobcats got right to work on offense in their first at-bats, with sophomore Ryan Bouma drawing a walk, heading to third on a single from senior Mikey Guy, and coming across home plate out a groundout by graduate Randy Steen.  McDonald was able to keep FSU in the lead 1-0 after two, leaving one on from Goldey-Beacom in the top of the second.

GCB jumped in front in the top half of the third, seeing two runs off four hits.  The Lightning then extended their lead to 5-1 in the top of the fourth, allowing freshman Kamden Sowers to come in and pitch for FSU.  Senior Doyle McNew led off the bottom of the fourth with a single to left field, advancing to second on an error from Goldey Beacom.  Freshman Manny Hall then recorded an RBI to get the score to 5-2, knocking a double to right to score McNew.

Sowers laid down the line to open the fifth, as Guy picked up a single offensively for Frostburg but was left on base.  Sophomore Ben Berger made his way to the mound to start the sixth, as a hit and a sacrifice fly gave GCB another run for a 6-2 game.  The Bobcats saw no action during their at-bats of the sixth, with Hall and sophomore Jackson Schalick getting on, but both were left stranded.

Sophomore Cristian Bonilla headed to the bump to wrap up the seventh, picking up a strikeout and leaving one on base, but Goldey-Beacom was able to spark for three more runs.  Junior Jake Holler saw the lone hit of the seventh for FSU, as the Bobcats dropped game one with a final of 9-2.

Frostburg got one early once again in game two, with Schalick seeing a lead-off single, advancing to second after redshirt freshman CJ Carmichael was walked.  Guy then saw another single on the day, collecting an RBI to score Schalick.  Senior Patrick Bauer saw his first appearance from the mound this season, getting the go-ahead start in game two, as the Lightning came ready, knocking three hits and scoring two runs to quickly jump in front 2-1 after one.

FSU drew three walks in the second, but were unable to cause any other action, leaving the three on base.  Bauer found his groove in the bottom of the inning, leaving one on base for a quiet outing.  Both teams saw another quiet inning in the third, with Bauer stranding another runner to keep the game at 2-1.  Sophomore Logan Helser tied the game up right away to open things in the fourth, smacking one over the center field fence for a 2-2 game.  Goldey-Beacom quickly responded, also sending a bomb over the fence to open up their offense of the fourth.

Frostburg went 1-2-3 at the plate in the top half of the fifth, with senior Cael Huyer, freshman Cameron King, and graduate Dan Morgano all coming in to pitch in the bottom of the inning, as GCB sparked for a 7-2 score.  Bouma led off the sixth with a double to left, later scoring on a wild pitch to sit the game at 7-3.  Morgano stayed on the mound for the bottom of the inning, as the Lightning added another run to their total after a Bobcat error.  Steen and Holler both got on in the top of the seventh, with the latter ripping a double, but Frostburg was unable to come up with anymore runs, falling in the second game 8-3.

Guy paved the way for FSU on offense, seeing three hits and an RBI on the day, with Holler being next with two knocks, and eight other Bobcats recording one hit.

With the losses, Frostburg finishes the weekend with an overall record of 2-2, while Goldey Beacom improves to 5-2 after the day.  The Bobcats are next on the road at Bluefield State for a two-day four game series starting Saturday, March 1 at 12 PM.  For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
