Weakley Sets All-Time Scoring Record in Women's Basketball's Final Second Loss to Concord

ATHENS, W.Va. – Senior Emilee Weakley set the all-time Frostburg State Women's Basketball scoring record in the team's 79-77 last second loss to Concord on Saturday afternoon.

Weakley currently sits at 1,974 career points in just two and a half years so far, surpassing Frostburg Women's Basketball legend, Sheila Colbert, who has held the record since the 1991 season with 1,960 total career points.  Weakley averages 25.97 points per game in her career, averaging a career best 27.7 points this season.

Graduate Sarah Shamdeen got the ball rolling on the day with a scoop layup inside the paint for the first score of the game, while senior Taylor Smith and freshman Julie Spinelli dropped in back-to-back buckets to lead the Bobcats to a 6-0 lead to open up play.  Just under two minutes in, Concord was able to get a jumper to fall, but Weakley responded on the other end with a jumper of her own.  Both squads saw a slow two minutes of action, before the Mountain Lions went on a 9-0 run to overtake the lead 11-8.  Smith then drained a triple from outside to tie the game with under two minutes left in the quarter, before CU sunk a duo of treys to round out the first on top 17-11.

Weakley swapped points with Concord to open the second quarter, draining a three for a 19-14 game.  Freshman Sydney Snyder then connected on a jumper for her first collegiate points, but both teams continued to exchange points with CU remaining in front.  Shamdeen saw four consecutive points, as back-to-back scores from Smith and Weakley tied the game at 25 just over midway through the quarter.  The Mountain Lions hit a go-ahead three for the lead, as six straight points from FSU put them on top 31-30.  Concord took the final three points of the quarter, holding on to a 33-31 edge at the half.

Weakley picked up a layup to start the third, tying the game at 33.  Smith and Weakley worked again to put Frostburg back on top, as a layup from Spinelli gave the Bobcats a 40-37 advantage.  A score from both senior Jasmine Johnson and Weakley increased FSU's edge to 44-39, but a three, followed by two free throws from the Mountain Lions put the game at another tie, this time at 44.  CU took the two-point edge a minute later, with Spinelli answering right away with a jumper inside.  Concord once again took the lead at the charity stripe, as the Bobcats were quick to answer once again, with Weakley being credited with another lay-in.  Another easy two from Johnson gave Frostburg a one-point advantage, but the Mountain Lions knocked down a jumper to end the quarter in control 54-53.

Spinelli hit a big three to begin play in the fourth and final quarter, seeing FSU in front 56-54.  Senior Alanna Tate put in a layup for another score for Frostburg, seeing four consecutive points of her own for a 60-57 game.  Concord splurged for an 8-0 run for almost two minutes, jumping back on top 65-60.  Weakley, Tate, and Spinelli scored the next three attempts for the Bobcats, but CU continued to hit their shots to remain in the lead.  Down 71-66 with 4:06 left in regulation, Weakley, doing what she does best, carried FSU to a 73-73 tie, strolling for a 7-0 run on her own.  Both teams kept it tied at 75 with under a minute left to go, with Johnson earning the tying score.  Concord then with the ball, struggled to get a shot off, as the Mountain Lions fumbled the ball and were forced to heave up a deep three, sinking the trey from just in front of half court with six seconds left to play.  Weakley drew a foul, sending herself to the line for two, where she made both for a 78-77 game with three seconds left.  The Bobcats were forced to foul to get the ball back in hopes of a last second shot, but CU went one-for-two at the line, allowing time to tick down off the rebound with the Mountain Lions coming out on top 79-77.

Putting up 28 points on her historic day, Weakley led all scorers while also pulling down seven rebounds.  Spinelli (14) and Smith (11) were next in double figures, with the former shooting 6-for-9 from the field and 2-for-3 from deep, while also grabbing a team-high eight rebounds. Johnson provided seven rebounds as well, while also racking up four blocks.

With the loss, Frostburg falls to 12-8 on the season, while Concord moves to 9-11.  The Bobcats are back in action on Wednesday, February 5 when the team travels to face West Virginia State at 5:30 PM.  For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
