Women's Basketball Soars Past D&E in Final Road Game of Regular Season

ELKINS, W.Va. – The Frostburg State Women's Basketball team took their final road game of the regular season by a score of 69-54 over Davis & Elkins on Wednesday evening.

Senior Emilee Weakley put up the first score of the game for either team, showing a layup in the paint.  Davis & Elkins tied the game not until almost two minutes in, as both teams traded missed shots to being the contest.  Frostburg worked for their lead, sparking a 10-0 run with freshman Julie Spinelli and senior Jasmine Johnson securing a 12-2 score with under four to play in the first.  The Senators broke their drought with a layup, before both squads exchanged threes, with senior Taylor Smith draining the triple for the Bobcats.  Weakley and sophomore Alanna Tate accounted for FSUs final points of the quarter, both laying in easy twos for a 19-10 game after the first 10 minutes of play.

Both teams struggled to shoot to open up the second, with freshman Ayla Hileman getting either team on the board first, scoring a layup underneath off an assist from sophomore Grace Middleton.  D&E responded with a quick lay-in of their own, sinking another one for a 21-14 game.  Graduate Sarah Shamdeen sunk two free throws to add to Frostburg's total, with Weakley adding back-to-back buckets to bring the game to 27-14 at the four minute mark.  Smith then added another easy layup for Frostburg, with Tate pitching in as well.  Davis & Elkins nailed a three to put them on the board, as Weakley answered with another layup on the other end.  Tate and Shamdeen found themselves each with an easy two to round out the half, extending the Bobcats lead to 37-19 at the break.

D&E took the first five points of the third, as FSU didn't make their mark in the quarter until the 6:18 mark, when freshman Laekyn Flinn laid in her first points of the game.  Middleton followed up with another easy two for FSU, before Weakley traded another bucket underneath with the Senators to sit the score at 43-27.  Davis & Elkins sunk a trey to get within 13, but a pair of free throws from Spinelli gave Frostburg an answer right back.  The Bobcats continued to add to their advantage at the charity stripe, moving in front 48-30.  Weakley exchanged a two with D&E to round out the quarter with FSU on top 50-34.

Tate scooped in a layup right out of the gate to begin the fourth, with the Senators putting in a triple on the other end.  Weakley continued her night in the paint, with Tate being credited with an assist, as Smith moved the game back to an 18-point differential at the free throw line.  Davis & Elkins again put in a triple, before both teams went silent for almost two minutes.  Tate racked up two more points at the charity stripe, as Weakley pounded in another jumper for a 59-40 game with under five to play.  Spinelli nailed a three to move the game to a 20-point deficit for D&E, as the Senators were able to pick up two more layups as time went on.  After another minute drought from both squads, Shamdeen found herself with an easy two, followed by a three from deep.  Davis & Elkins fought to add six more points to their score, with sophomore Olivia Looker getting on the board for Frostburg as time finished out, as the Bobcats took the 69-54 victory.

Weakley finished with a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds, shooting 9-for-18 from the floor.  Spinelli was next in double figures with 12 points and six rebounds, while Tate saw 10 points and nine rebounds.

With the win, Frostburg moves to 18-9 on the season, while Davis & Elkins falls to 2-23.  The Bobcats return home for their regular season finale on Saturday, March 1, hosting Fairmont State at 2 PM for Senior Day.  For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
