ECC Men's Lacrosse Semifinal Preview: #3 Frostburg State vs #2 Molloy

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. – The Frostburg State Men's Lacrosse team takes their talents up north to compete in the ECC Semifinals on Wednesday as the No. 3 seed, traveling to take on the hosts of No. 2 Molloy. 
 
How They Got Here
Frostburg enters the tournament off a fresh 13-7 ECC victory over Roberts Wesleyan on Saturday that allowed them to secure the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament.  The Bobcats sit at 7-8 overall with a 4-2 mark in ECC play with their losses coming to Mercy and Molly, both by two goals or less.
 
Molly gears up for the ECC tournament as the No. 2 overall seed, falling to the No. 1 seed of Mercy in their regular season finale by a close 13-12 call in overtime.  The Lions are 13-4 overall with a solid 5-1 record in conference play, currently marked at No. 15 in the most recent USILA Division II rankings.
 
The Matchup
FSU holds the 4-2 advantage in the history of the two teams, with the two losses being of just one goal each.  Frostburg won the first three meetings between the two squads, until MU took their 2023 contest by a final score of 15-14.  The Bobcats fought back for the 12-11 victory a season ago, as the Lions hung on for the 7-6 win in 2025, making the last three meetings between the two decided by one goal.
 
The Players
Frostburg is led upfront on offense by the duo of First Team All-ECC members senior Wesley Phillips and sophomore Luke Roach, both who have fit extremely well into their providing role this season.  Phillips, in his lone year as a Bobcat, leads the team and conference in assists with 29, while also sending in 21 goals for a total of 50 points, as well as seeing a solid number of ground balls with 33.  Roach leads FSU in goals scored in 2025 with 29, dishing out seven assists and being credited with 18 ground balls so far on the year.  Senior Alex Walstrum carries Frostburg and the ECC in the X, earning him First Team All-ECC honors off a 121-for-160 showing in the face-off position for a conference best .756% and a team best 88 ground balls, while also recording a pair of goals and assists as well.  Looking at the Bobcats strongest suit, their defense is led by First Team honoree senior Seamus Kearney, who holds a team-high 35 caused turnovers, along with 54 ground balls and four goals, as he is partnered with Second Team All-ECC member senior Landon Bruce, who saw 23 ground balls and 15 CT's during the regular season.  The pair of defenders protect other Second Team selection senior Logan Covey, who stands in goal for Frostburg with 148 saves on the year for a 7.43 goals against average and .635 save percentage.
 
The Lions are stacked all throughout the field, starting with ECC Goalkeeper of the Year Christian Michaels, who has started in net all 17 games for MU, racking up 176 saves for a 6.38 goals against average and a .654% save percentage, all which are top-2 in the conference.  Working their way up the field, defender Aiden Dinnigan was awarded ECC Co-Freshman of the Year, putting up 32 caused turnovers and 43 ground balls in his first collegiate season.  Attackman Luke Hickman and midfielder Brian Green join both major award honorees on the First Team, being the top two scorers for Molly with the former seeing 34 goals and 23 assists, and the latter going for 31 goals and 20 assists.  Jake Taylor, another attacker for the Lions, earned Second Team All-ECC honors after a 27 goal, 11 assists, and 25 ground ball regular season, with midfielder Bryan Diliberto joining him with 28 goals and 12 assists.  LSM Thomas Kofod and SSDM Rocco Hogan round out the Second Team mentions for MU, with the former leading the team in caused turnovers (36) and sitting second in ground balls (61), while the latter scooped up 53 ground balls on the year, caused five CT's, and scored three goals.  Molloy is led by ECC Coach of the Year, Bill Dunn, who is now a five-time recipient of the award.
 
The Rest of the Field
The defending champs of Mercy hold on to the No. 1 seed, as they host No. 4 Roberts Wesleyan in the other semifinal matchup today with all four teams fighting for a spot in the conference championship.
