MEC Women's Lacrosse Semifinal Preview: #1 Frostburg State vs #4 Wheeling
FROSTBURG, Md. – After another undefeated season in MEC play, Frostburg State Women's Lacrosse holds the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament, welcoming the No. 4 seed of Wheeling to Bobcat Stadium on Thursday for their MEC semifinal matchup.
How They Got Here
On a tare in the Mountain East Conference, Frostburg showed their second straight season of a perfect 8-0 record in conference competition, posting an overall record of 11-6. The Bobcats started their 2025 campaign with a dominant 21-2 win over Holy Family, taking down both Gannon and Jefferson before starting conference play. For the third consecutive year, FSU was named MEC Regular Season Champions.
Wheeling, in their return to the MEC, went 4-4 in conference competition, sitting at 7-7 overall. The Cardinals opened their season with two straight wins, one being over Tiffin (Ohio), as WU swept both series with conference opponents West Virginia Wesleyan and Davis & Elkins to get them to four conference wins. Wheeling defeated D&E on Sunday in the MEC's play-in game to get them back to the tournament semifinals since their most previous season in 2019.
The Matchup
Frostburg took both contents over the Cardinals this year, giving them a 2-0 start in the all-time history between the two. The Bobcats scored over 20 goals in both meetings, while also giving up less than 10 goals in each game as well. FSU earned the 21-6 win on the road in March, before taking the series with a 22-8 victory at home in early April.
The Players
Frostburg stands strong all over, starting up front with First Team All-MEC selections junior Neila Haney (65 goals, 18 assists) and graduate Camden DeMaio (56 goals, 35 assists), who sit as the top two point totalers in the conference. Joining them as another offensive weapon is fellow First Team member senior midfielder Kerri Hayes, who holds a 24 goal and six assist season so far, while also collecting 15 caused turnovers and 17 groundballs. Defensively, FSU is carried by a trio of key defenders starting with the junior duo of Jessie Bare (37 CT's, 39 GB's) and Izzy Kelly (31 CT's, 35 GB's), as well as senior Delaney Devers (21 CT's, 25 GB's), all who received First Team honors as well. Senior Julia Badolato is another Bobcat to watch out for on the offensive end, putting up 30 goals and 13 assists to award her a Second Team All-MEC nod, while junior midfielders Emily Lamoreaux (20 goals, 12 assists, 41 draw controls) and Daniella Boss (18 goals, 5 assists, 29 DC's), and senior goalkeeper Grace Dickey round out the rest of the field for FSU, all receiving All-MEC Honorable Mention, as the latter is the conference leader in save percentage (.526) and goals against average (7.44). Freshman Kamryn Lee posted a strong suit off the bench, being named to the All-MEC Freshman Team in her first collegiate season, as she holds onto to seven CT's and 12 groundballs.
Wheeling is led by First Team All-MEC midfielder Trinity Rose, who leads the team in goals with 43, while also dishing out 12 assists for another team-high of 55 points. Rose also stands alone in draw controls (86), ground balls (69), and caused turnovers (53), doing it all for the Cardinals. WU's Second Team All-MEC pairing of Klara Domachowska and Jovie Noack provide in the midfield and attack position, with the former showing 23 goals, 14 assists, and 33 draw controls throughout the season, while the latter sits with 31 goals for second most on the team. Freshman Giavonna Perkins stands tall in goal for Wheeling, being named to the All-MEC Freshman Team after putting up 73 saves and a 9.655 goals against average in her first collegiate season.
The Rest of the Field
The No. 2 seed of Charleson (WV) is set to face No. 3 Dominican (CA), as the Penguins are set to debut in the Mountain East Conference Tournament, with both teams fighting for a trip to the cup.
