Pettyjohn, Paige Net for Women's Soccer in Shutout Win Over West Liberty

WEST LIBERTY, W. Va The Frostburg Women's Soccer team defeated West Liberty on the road with a 2-0 shutout on Wednesday evening.

The Bobcats earned the first chance of the game just over ten minutes in, as after a throw-in, junior Madison Hinton headed the ball toward the top left of the goal, but right into the hands of WLU goalkeeper Cianna Butera. Five minutes later, FSU had two more shots within a minute, with senior Carly Gillete firing one up top from nearly midfield, then Butera nearly gifted sophomore Mollie Rebuck a chance that also missed to the left. Frostburg kept the pressure up a minute and a half later, as sophomore Ellie Filder sent one left of the goal.

As FSU worked to keep the Hiltoppers' attack at bay, they also continued to put more pressure on the other end of the field, and paid off when junior Chelsea Pettyjohn earned possession high up the pitch and found sophomore Cassify Paige, who was charging into the box and used her momentum to sink the ball into the top right of the goal. With a 1-0 lead, Frostburg wasn't looking to slow down at all, as after the kickoff, they managed three shots within as many minutes, the first of which was out to the right by senior Morgan Mizrek, and the following two came from Fielder, one missing high and the other saved. In the remainder of the half, the Bobcats had another three chances, one by senior Skylar Ehart, which went wide, and the other two came from Paige and sophomore Elena Fernandez, both missing to the right.

Searching to add more, FSU came hot out of the gate in the second half, getting a shot off within the first three minutes as sophomore Ana Davis drove down the pitch and kicked one directly into the arms of Butera. After West Liberty managed their first shot of the game 52 minutes in, which sophomore Kayla Doty saved, Frostburg quickly responded as sophomore Madison Hobson shot one well above the goal.

An insurance goal came for the Bobcats when Pettyjon was able to receive a headed pass from sophomore Rayiah Davis and softly put her own header off the bounce and past Butera for a 2-0 lead. Just like they had done the entire game, FSU's attack peppered the Hiltoppers with two more chances, as Paige's shot was blocked while Ana Davis shot high. Senior Mary Greco got her first chances of the night in the final 20 minutes, taking two shots within a minute, however both missed.

As the game entered the final 15 to play, Gillette managed another shot that Butera fell on, while senior Hannah Clagett generated two shots, one that was wide right and the other was right to Butera. Gillette had two more shots, both of which missed wide right, before WLU got their second and final chance of the night, but it was nowhere near the goal for a 2-0 final.

Frostburg held a 24-2 advantage in shots, with eight on target to West Liberty's one.

With the win, the Bobcats improve to 8-4-2 while the Hiltopppers move to 2-12 on the year. Frostburg is back at home on Saturday, October 25 for Senior Day as they face Point Park at 4 PM. For more information, please visit frostburgsports.com.
