Foret Earns First Career Shutout as Men's Soccer Takes Down Wesleyan in Season Opener

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – The Frostburg State Men's Soccer team took on West Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday afternoon for their first contest of the season, winning the match 2-0 on the road.

Wesleyan kicked off to begin the game, earning a free kick almost two minutes in, but turned the ball over to Frostburg.  Senior Randy Ferrin quickly took the first shot of the game for either team, shooting the ball high.  FSU kept possession on their offensive half for the next few minutes, setting up freshman Andrew Denard for a try at goal, where he missed wide right.  Just after the 10 minute mark, WVWC found themselves with an opportunity at goal, just missing off target, with the ball hitting the left post.  Around a minute later, at the 12:19 mark, senior Mateo Cuadros placed the ball for Ferrin to slot the ball into the back of the net for the first goal of the game and the season for Frostburg, putting FSU in the lead 1-0.

Frostburg continued to dominate possession, moving the ball around on offense, setting up a try for senior Abdur-Rahman Neama, that was saved by the keeper.  Both teams traded shots over the next couple minutes, with sophomore Hugo Portillo firing away at goal, and freshman Jan Foret earning his first save of the game.  Freshman Dominic Good saw a chance at a score, prior to Foret making two more saves for Frostburg in goal, before Wesleyan sent their third straight shot just high.  Both teams battled for possession as the half timed out, with both teams putting together drives down field, but neither were able to score as FSU remained ahead 1-0 heading into the break.

Teams traded pairs of throw-ins to begin the second half, before Frostburg set themselves up with a corner kick, trying to add to their lead.  WVWC was able to get the ball out of their defensive end, before junior Carlos Quintero Rivas created a chance at goal, slicing the ball into the low left corner to increase FSU's lead to 2-0 at the 52:53 mark.

Wesleyan tried to answer right away, with a shot two minutes later, but their chance was blocked.  Frostburg received two free kicks, looking to find a way to add to their lead, as Cuadros fired his first shot of the day, sending it wide left.  WVWC earned a corner kick, still looking for their first goal of the day, but another shot from Wesleyan would be scooped up Foret.  Both teams exchanged shots, with sophomore Tom Leinhos firing away from outside but was blocked, and Foret making yet another save in goal.  FSU took two more shots over the next several minutes, with Portillo and Quintero Rivas sending them inside, as one was sent left, and one was blocked.  Wesleyan tried four more times at goal, hoping to get on the board, but Frostburg's defense stood in the way and Foret picked up one more save, allowing FSU to take the 2-0 win.

FSU finished with 11 shots on the day, as Wesleyan fired away 13.  Foret earned his first shutout of the season, knotting six total saves.

With the win, Frostburg starts their season 1-0, while Wesleyan begins 0-1.  FSU travels home for their next match, welcoming in District of Columbia on Wednesday, September 11 at 7 PM for the team's home opener.  For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
