Muha, Sharp, Weakley Help Women's Basketball Earn Second-Straight MEC Road Win
BUCKHANNON, W. Va. - The Frostburg State Women's Basketball team won their second straight conference game, defeating West Virginia Wesleyan on the road Tuesday evening by a final score of 79-69.
Wesleyan started the scoring off first, connecting on jumper five seconds into the game on their opening possession. Sophomore Emilee Weakley drew a quick foul for Frostburg, forcing herself to go to the free throw line where she would sink one free throw, missing the second but putting freshman Jenna Muha in position for an offensive rebound and tip-in for a 3-2 FSU lead. Graduate Maggie Sharp sunk her first shot of the night, a three pointer, getting Frostburg's offense going. Sharp hit another trey from deep, as jumpers from Muha and junior Harley Herndon built the lead for FSU, pushing Frostburg ahead 17-12 after one.
Freshman Grace Middelton converted a quick jumper to open the second, as a layup from Weakley pushed FSU's lead to nine. Middleton, keeping her offensive spark, connected on a shot from deep, giving Frostburg a 24-14 lead, their first double-digit lead of the game. Junior Jasmine Johnson provided a spark on defense for FSU, swatting a shot from WVWC. A free throw from Weakley, another two-pointer by Middleton, and a perfect trip to the free throw line by Sharp put Frostburg up by 12. Back-to-back jumpers from Muha gave FSU a 33-17 advantage just over half way through the second quarter. FSU ended the quarter racking up the points, pushing forward with a 13-3 run to end the half. Freshman Alanna Tate got in on the scoring action, then Weakley and Muha each converted and-one opportunities for a 49-23 Frostburg lead at the break following a 32-point quarter.
Looking for some life, WVWC connected from deep to start the third as FSU responded right away with five straight points. Weakley, Tate, and Sharp all hit jumpers, allowing Wesleyan no chance to get back into the game. Sharp converted once again from behind the arc, increasing Frostburg's lead to 63-36 with 2:43 left in the third quarter. Muha, Sharp, and graduate Ciara Thomas all sunk free throws to round out the quarter and continue to add to FSU's lead, as Frostburg had a 67-43 advantage heading into the fourth and final quarter.
Weakley wasted no time to get another bucket, racing down the court for a fastbreak layup to open the last 10 minutes of play. Neither team scored for around a minute, as Wesleyan hit two threes to open their scoring in the frame. Weakley and Thomas continued their success at the charity stripe, each sinking a pair of free throws. Freshman Jenna Liska scored her first bucket of the night, hitting a jumper in transition for a 76-56 score with less than five minutes to go in regulation. WVWC pushed for a 13-3 run to end the game, but Frostburg did everything they needed to in order to come out on top, securing the 79-69 victory.
Weakley led FSU in scoring with 22 points on 6-for-13 scoring and 9-for-12 from the free throw line, while also grabbing six rebounds. Muha was right behind her with 17 points, nine rebounds, and three steals, while Sharp finished with 14 points.
With the win, FSU moves to 3-2 on the season while Wesleyan falls to 2-2. Frostburg is back in action at home on Wednesday, November 29 at 5:30 PM against Charleston (WV). For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
