Five Second Half Goals Power Women's Soccer Past WVWC at Home

FROSTBURG, Md. – Five different players found the net for Frostburg State Women's Soccer in their commanding 6-0 victory over West Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday afternoon.

WVWC had some early pressure to start the match, as three minutes in they had the game's first effort, a shot that went wide of senior Katie Sterne's goal. FSU answered back by controlling nearly the entirety of possession for the next 40 minutes. Junior Carly Gillette was a constant threat in midfield, seeing one low effort saved by keeper Paige Miller before collecting a loose ball just inside the 18 and swinging her left-footed shot into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead 15 minutes in.

Seniors Madi Allen and Carolyn DeSena proceeded to each try their luck at goal, though each was too close to Miller. Frostburg kept up the pressure, as before hitting the 15-minute mark, senior Cat Smith and freshman Cassidy Paige each got their head to crosses swung in, though neither could get their efforts on target, then sophomore Grace Sarver shot close to Miller for another save. Freshman Mollie Rebuck had a couple of late efforts in search of an insurance goal, but missed one left and another right to take things into the break at 1-0.

FSU continued their control of the game into the second, as less than five minutes in, junior Morgan Mrizek clipped a ball over the top for DeSena to run onto, with her cross then finding a wide-open Allen in front of goal for a tap-in 2-0 lead. Wesleyan tried to respond with a shot from deep less than a minute later, but Sterne made an easy catch. Allen struck again within five minutes, as freshman Rayiah Davis lofted a ball to the top of the 18, which the former took smartly on the volley, chipping Miller for a 3-0 advantage.

In the next couple minutes, DeSena and Davis both missed the target, as the Frostburg defense held WVWC at bay through much of the half. Inside the final 20 minutes, junior Hannah Clagett received the ball at the edge of the box and showed great footwork to dance around a pair of defenders, but Miller was quick out of her goal to deny the shot. Two minutes later, on an FSU corner swung in by senior Mei Homman, Smith met it with full force for the fourth of the day.

Freshman Elena Fernandez had an impressive day off the bench, working her way for a shot saved by Miller before an attack down the right wing from classmate Madison Hobson found her in the center of goal, putting away the first of her career. With just five minutes on the clock, FSU polished off their afternoon, as Clagett swung a dangerous corner over Miller's head and would have nestled in the back of the net, helped on its way by a WVWC defender for the final score at 6-0.

Frostburg put up 19 shots in the match, including 12 on goal, while limiting the visitors to just three and one, respectively.

With the win, FSU improves to 10-2-1, while Wesleyan drops to 5-6-2. Frostburg remains at home to face Salem (WV) on Wednesday, October 23 at 5 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
