Davis, Rivas Net Late Goals to Lead Men's Soccer to Road Win Over Concord
ATHENS, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Men's Soccer team scored a pair of late goals to stun Concord on the road in a 2-1 victory.
FSU would get the opening chance of the game six minutes in, as sophomore Mason Salvadge received the ball out on the left wing and fired in a cross that was met well by senior Carlos Quintero Rivas but tipped away by keeper Nathan Scargill. After 10 minutes, CU worked a pair of chances, with one effort going high and wide and the next blocked by the Bobcat defense.
The Mountain Lions continued their pressure, flicking a ball into the box and causing some chaos, which ended up in Nick Lowery firing a volley that was parried away by sophomore keeper Jan Foret and cleared out by classmate Andrew Denard. Over the next five minutes, both teams sent shots over the bar before Concord's Malher Santi Possu was taken down in the box for a penalty kick, which he converted for a 1-0 advantage.
Sophomore Dom Good tried to get an immediate equalizer, but his left-footed effort from the top of the 18 was pulled just wide of the goal. Three minutes later, senior Kevin Garcia-Torres got hold of a bouncing ball in the box and spun to fire towards goal, but Scargill comfortably dove to his right to fall on it, then Salvadge put another volley over.
CU got their offense going again midway through the half, as Santi Possu tried a curler from distance that was initially saved and spilled by Foret, however he recovered in time to block Issa El Assal's follow-up try. The final 15 minutes went by without much action to speak of, as Rivas had a shot blocked while Concord sent one wide right off a corner to end the half.
Freshman Inzaghi Harmon attempted to spark the Bobcats to start the second period but saw his shot blocked, then Santi Possu fired high on a free kick. It took another 15 minutes for either side to get an effort away, as Santiago Lopez looked to have doubled the hosts' advantage on a header from a corner, but he put it into the side netting.
The Mountain Lions continued to get attacking opportunities but weren't able to make much of them, as Dominique Malhomme had a pair of shots blocked while Lopez missed another chance high and wide. Concord's defense held firm up until the final 10 minutes, as Harmon had an effort from six yards out blocked behind for a corner, from which Rivas would fire high over the bar.
With just over five minutes to go, Frostburg began to throw bodies forward, as a loose ball into the box found Salvadge, who had a pass deflected into the path of freshman Spencer Davis to sweep home on his left foot for the equalizer. Just 30 seconds of game time later, Salvadge threaded a pass through the backline to Rivas, who took a pair of touches and fired a rocket past Scargill for a stunning 2-1 advantage. FSU's defense stood their ground the rest of the way, blocking the only attempt towards Foret's goal to secure the victory.
The Mountain Lions out-shot FSU 15-11, however the sides were even in attempts on goal with four apiece.
With the win, Frostburg improves to 4-5-2 on the year, while Concord drops to 8-3. FSU returns to Bobcat Stadium to host Salem (WV) on Wednesday, October 15 at 7 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
