Four See Double Figures, Smith Surpasses 1,000 Career Points in Women's Basketball's Home Win Over Glenville
FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Women's Basketball team fought to the end to get their revenge win over Glenville State on Wednesday evening, taking down the Pioneers by a final score of 96-88.
Glenville got the game going with a three, as senior Emilee Weakley nailed a triple on the other end to see a quick tie game from behind the arc. The Pioneers connected on another triple on their next look at offense, with freshman Julie Spinelli answering from deep again for the Bobcats. Spinelli knocked down another trey for Frostburg to give them their first lead of the night at 9-8. Weakley picked up four consecutive points to keep FSU on top 13-10, as GSU converted a tip-in to make it a one-point game. Both teams were quiet until around the midway mark of the quarter, as Weakley splurged for three points to advance the Bobcats' lead. Sophomore Alanna Tate saw her first points of the night at the free throw line, sinking her two attempts, moving the game to 18-12. Spinelli and Weakley worked to keep FSU in front early on, extending Frostburg's lead to seven. Graduate Sarah Shamdeen and Tate scored the last points of the quarter, leaving the Bobcats on top 27-19 after one.
Both teams got off to a bit of a quiet start in the second, until Weakley was fouled off a fastbreak attempt, sending her to the line for two points. A GSU miss on the other end led to a layup from senior Jasmine Johnson underneath, pushing Frostburg's lead to 31-19. After two minutes in, Glenville was able to get on the board from the charity stripe, but Tate responded right back with an easy two of her own. The Pioneers sunk back-to-back threes to get within six, but a duo of baskets from the Bobcats kept it at a double digit game at 37-27. Weakley continued to dominate all around the floor, seeing the next seven points for FSU. Johnson found herself with another easy layup to increase the margin to 12, as two free throws from senior Taylor Smith and Weakley kept the game at a double digit gap at the break, giving Frostburg a 50-40 lead at the half.
Spinelli saw a tip-in after an offensive rebound to begin the third quarter, as again the Bobcats kept Glenville quiet for over the first minute. Weakley knocked down another pair of free throws before the Pioneers found the basket for a 54-42 score. With that GSU went on a 10-0 run for almost four minutes, getting within four for a 54-50 game. Johnson broke the silence from Frostburg with a layup in the paint, but Glenville saw back-to-back scores again to get within one. Shamdeen pushed FSU ahead with a triple, as another duo of scores from the Pioneers tied the game at 59. A layup from Shamdeen gave Frostburg the go-ahead, but again GSU tied the game, this time at the free throw line. Once again, Shamdeen put the Bobcats back in front by two, but a trey from deep by Glenville gave the Pioneers a 64-63 advantage with a minute left in the third. Smith responded with a huge momentum shifter to end the quarter, sinking a three from the corner for a 66-64 FSU lead heading into the fourth.
Tate hustled down for a layup to open the fourth, pushing Frostburg in front by four. Another pair of baskets from Glenville saw another tie game, until scores from Weakley and Tate gave the Bobcats another four-point advantage. A triple from GSU brought them within one, but FSU stayed one step ahead as Weakley converted a layup. Spinelli worked for a three off a steal from Johnson to push the game to 77-71, as Smith traded layups with Glenville, allowing Frostburg to stay ahead by six around the halfway mark. Five huge points from Smith in a span of 30 seconds gave the Bobcats a six point lead, as Weakley added three more points to Frostburg's score for a 87-78 game. With under three minutes left to play, Weakley added a free throw to move the game to double digits once again. Keeping the Pioneers scoreless for over another minute, Spinelli sealed the deal with a three from deep for a 91-78 game with 1:18 left in regulation. Glenville sunk a three of their of their own in response to bring the score down to 91-81, connecting on five more points as time ticked down. Smith and Tate both hit free throws as game finished out, putting Frostburg on top 96-88 for the home win.
Weakley finished the night with a game-high 35 points, shooting 11-for-23 from the floor and 11-for-14 from the free throw line, while also grabbing eight rebounds. Spinelli was next with 16 points, going 6-for-11 from the floor and 4-for-8 from three, while pulling down seven rebounds.
