Women's Soccer Unable to Hold On to Early Lead in Loss to IUP

BOYDS, Md. – The Frostburg State Women's Soccer team suffered their first loss of the season 2-1 to Indiana (Pa.) at the MD Soccerplex on Saturday afternoon.
 
IUP had the first attempt of the game, one that went high and wide of the target, inside the first two minutes. The Bobcats controlled the vast majority of the next half hour, beginning with a pair of corner kicks at the seven-minute mark. After the Crimson Hawks initially cleared the latter of the two, junior Morgan Mrizek fed classmate Jayme Sooy for the game's opening score eight minutes in.
 
Mrizek and freshman Ellie Fiedler each shot wide in the next 10 minutes, while junior Carly Gillette had a shot saved as FSU searched for a second goal but couldn't find one. IUP finally got a shot on target with 15 minutes left in the half, then scored with their second two minutes later, capitalizing on a giveaway in midfield to tie things at 1-1.
 
The equalizer gave the Crimson Hawks some momentum and energy, as they immediately came back down the field to win a corner, though Frostburg was able to defend it. With just over four minutes left in the half, a giveaway deep in Bobcat territory allowed an IUP shot from just outside the box to reach the bottom left corner for a 2-1 lead.
 
FSU came out of the break with freshman Mollie Rebuck and senior Mei Homman both testing Crimson Hawk keeper Makenna Yarrow, who made saves on both. After a high shot by IUP, Rebuck again tested her luck but was denied once more with 30 minutes on the clock.
 
Desperate to tie the game, Frostburg had a flurry of shots within a five-minute period, as Rebuck, Homman, and freshman Rayiah Davis all forced Yarrow into saves to keep her team in the lead. After the Crimson Hawks had a shot saved, Mrizek was the next to test Yarrow, who stood tall again. As time ticked down, Gillette and Sooy both went in search of a tying goal, but both shot high, as IUP came out on top 2-1.
 
The Bobcats held a 15-10 advantage in shots, with a 9-6 discrepancy in shots on goal.
 
With the loss, Frostburg drops to 1-1 on the year, while IUP begins their season 1-0. FSU returns to action on Saturday, September 14 at 4 p.m. for a road match against Salem (WV). Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
