Pioneers Outlast Football in Double Overtime Victory
FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Football team fell 19-13 in a close game that went into double overtime against a competitive Glenville State on Saturday afternoon.
Today, FSU hosted Youth Bobcat Day and welcomed young future Bobcats to the stadium and on the field.
The Pioneers began the game with the ball, as FSU won the coin toss and chose to defer the ball to the second half. With the kickoff, GSU was able to rush for a six-yard gain, then a long pass from quarterback Anthony Garrett was caught at the Frostburg 45 for 39 yards. After a few penalties, the Pioneers were only able to make it to the Bobcat 42 before senior Marquise Allsup dove to intercept a pass at the FSU four. Frostburg quickly found their groove as they were able to put up three straight first downs, making their way down to the Pioneer 32. After getting down to 4th-and-1 from the 23, a stumble before being able to hand the ball off resulted in a loss of downs as things remained 0-0. Both defenses were locked in, forcing a combined four consecutive three-and-outs as the clock hit zero signaling the end of the quarter with GSU driving from their own 20.
Although Glenville started with the ball in the second quarter, they failed to make much headway with the help of a pair of penalties and two tackles from redshirt junior Dom Tiaga, who was assisted on the latter by senior Jaylen Boyd. Back on offense, Frostburg was able to make little progress down the field, with the highlight coming on redshirt junior Myles Fulton firing a strike to senior JeVonn Gilyard for a 16-yard catch-and-run. GSU finally put together a consistent drive, converting an early 3rd-and-9 while chunking downfield before Garrett threw a pass over the middle to Tariq Miller, who brought the ball in for the touchdown and an extra point which put Glenville ahead 7-0.
Seeking to respond, FSU did just that on their following drive, as the Bobcats were able to maneuver their way into Pioneer territory, as Fulton found redshirt sophomore Tra'Shaun Timmons and junior Daysen Shell on gains of 16 and 13 yards, respectively. Shell then went for five yards on a jet sweep to convert a 4th-and-1, but afterwards the drive stalled out. Frostburg sent out redshirt sophomore Harrison Fritz to try a 33-yard field goal, but despite the kick attempt being good, it was nullified by a roughing the kicker penalty, giving FSU an automatic first down. The Bobcats took advantage of their opportunity to the fullest, as in the following play, Fulton threw to a wide-open Owen Doyle, who ran the ball right into the end zone unscathed, scoring FSU's first touchdown. Fritz came back on for the try after, and once again, the kick was good, tying things at 7-7, as Glenville just ran out the clock to get to halftime.
Receiving the ball in the third quarter, Timmons was able to return the kickoff for 37 yards to get into some good field position. After a few incomplete passes, an offside and sideline interference penalty from the Pioneers gave FSU a first down. The combination of Doyle and redshirt sophomore KJ Smothers ground the ball down to the Pioneer eight yard line before being stopped. Fritz stepped in and knocked through from 25 out to give the Bobcats their first lead at 10-7. The FSU defense worked to keep GSU on their side of the field, as early in the set of downs, Boyd and redshirt sophomore Carter Mazalewski made two assisted tackles together. Even so, Glenville was able to convert a 3rd-and-9 from Garrett to Tariq Meredith, eventually making it all the way down to the Frostburg one-yard line. On back-to-back plays, senior Kamari Ramsey joined with Harich and classmate Rainer Halveland to stop a pair of runs, then Garrett fell for a loss of three yards before the Pioneers were forced to attempt to make a field goal at 10-10. Each team had another set of three-and-outs in the quarter as the clock hit zero with Frostburg driving.
Early in the quarter, Fulton found sophomore Ray Adames for 16 yards to get into GSU's side of the field, as Doyle and Smothers got them to within the nine-yard line. The Bobcats decided to go for it on 4th-and-2 from the eight but were turned away. Back-to-back punts followed, as with Glenville trying to drive, junior Tristin Forby jumped in front of a pass and intercepted the ball, getting a 23-yard return down to the Pioneer 32. Frostburg only managed one yard on the drive, as Fritz would make an attempt from 48 yards out, which the Pioneers blocked. Both teams punted once again on their resulting drives, with the Bobcats getting the ball back as the clock read 2:12 in regulation. Fulton got Gilyard open on a screen that went 23 yards, while Doyle had a 13-yard gain down to the Glenville 15. After not being able to advance much further, Fritz attempted another field goal with a minute and a half left, but pulled the ball wide left. As GSU tried to get down to field goal range, a deep pass down the left side was intercepted by Harich, resulting in a touchback, and eventually sending the game to overtime.
Frostburg won the toss and elected to begin on defense. The Pioneers got down to the Bobcat six, but Harich broke up a pass inside the end zone and Mazalewski forced Garrett into a bad throw that forced a field goal, putting GSU on top 13-10. Fulton fired to Timmons on the right side for 14 yards to get FSU going, but just like Glenville had done, the Bobcats had to settle for a field goal from 22 yards, which Fritz sent right down the middle of the posts. Tied up again, the game went into double overtime, and both teams had another chance to secure the lead. FSU had the ball first to try and had another big-yardage play to start, with Adames wide open in the middle of the field for 18 yards. A false start put them back to the Glenville 10, then after an eight-yard completion, the Bobcats went for a touchdown on 4th-and-2, but it couldn't be hauled in. Needing any type of score to end the game, a defensive holding gave GSU a free 10 yards to begin their drive. Five plays and 15 yards later, Jermiah King rushed the middle and into the end zone for a touchdown to give the Pioneers the 19-13 victory.
Fulton ended the game with 209 yards and a touchdown, with Timmons his favorite target on six catches for 83 yards. Doyle toted the ball 22 times for 107 yards while catching a pair of passes for 12 yards and a score. On the defensive side of things, Boyd drove the effort with a team-high 12 tackles, followed by junior Daquan Stevenson, who tallied seven and a sack.
The loss moves the FSU to 5-1 overall on the season as Glenville improves to 3-3. On Saturday, October 18, the Bobcats hit the road as they travel to Charleston (WV) to play against the Golden Eagles at 1 PM. For more information, please visit frostburgsports.com.
