Haney, DeMaio Key Big Women's Lacrosse Victory Over WVWC

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Women's Lacrosse team eased past West Virginia Wesleyan 25-2 at home on Wednesday evening.

It took only 38 seconds for FSU to get on the board, as junior Neila Haney took the opening draw and was quickly found by graduate Camden DeMaio for the first goal of the day. Just one minute later, after a caused turnover by sophomore Abbey Warner and groundball pickup from junior Jessie Bare, the DeMaio-Haney partnership paid off once more for a 2-0 lead. The Frostburg momentum continued with two more goals 40 seconds apart, as junior Daniella Boss and senior Megan Keller each caused turnovers that led to a free position goal from senior Julia Badolato and DeMaio picking up her third assist to freshman Megan Gray.

After another WVWC turnover, FSU fired off three scores in almost 30 seconds, as senior Natalie Williams got the goals going off a feed from DeMaio before turning provider to Haney, with Badolato polishing off the run with Warner assisting for a 7-0 advantage. Frostburg had three shots go wide before a yellow card against Wesleyan allowed Haney a free position goal. Boss was the next to put her name on the score sheet with an assist from junior Emily Lamoreaux, then DeMaio dished another pass to junior Sydney Stone to fire home and get to a running clock, as Williams finished off the quarter with a goal from Haney's pass at 11-0.

With the first quarter opening with a flurry of goals, the second period went nearly five minutes without a score, as a combination of goalkeeper saves and turnovers kept each team off the board. Haney finally broke through on another free position to kick things off, then Lamoreaux netted on a great feed from sophomore Gianna Leonardi. Stone then caused a turnover that set up a free position score from Gray, who tacked on a man-up goal with DeMaio once more assisting. With time winding down to the half, Haney put another home with senior Brittyn Leonard earning the assist, then despite going a player down, freshman Kamryn Lee picked up a loose WVWC pass and turned it into an assist to Stone to end the half with a 17-0 lead.

Coming out of the break, senior goalkeeper Nicole Gray picked up her second save to preserve a team shutout bid, while DeMaio kept the offense flowing, this time picking up her first goal off a Badolato pass. With six minutes gone in the frame, sophomore Maya Mosslih came up with one of the highlights of the contest, intercepting a Wesleyan pass at midfield and taking it to goal herself for her first career point. Gray and Mosslih each picked up a caused turnover to keep WVWC's offense at bay, while Stone put home a free position chance for a 20-0 score after three.

Several players got chances to impress in the fourth quarter, with freshman Sydney Serio scoring her first collegiate goal from a senior Natalie Crawford assist, then freshman Gigi Meyer was the next to earn the milestone. Serio netted her second with an assist from classmate Julia Bannister, then senior Kerri Hayes joined in with a free position score for a 24-goal advantage. In the final five minutes, Wesleyan was able to get on the board twice, with Wiktoria Walska and Francesca Sloan each getting a goal either side of a Boss free position for a 25-2 final.

Haney and DeMaio led the offense with seven points apiece, combining for seven goals and seven assists on the day. Stone recorded a hat trick while Badolato, Serio, Williams, and Boss all recorded multi-goal games. Mosslih led the defensive effort with three caused turnovers and a pair of groundballs, while Boss, Haney, and Lamoreaux each tied for a team-high four draw controls.

With the win, Frostburg improves to 5-6 on the year, while WVWC falls to 1-6. FSU next hits the road to face Wheeling for the first time in program history on Saturday, March 29 at 1 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
