Weakley's 40-Piece Helps Women's Basketball to First-Ever Win Over Golden Eagles
FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Women's Basketball team won their third straight MEC game, defeating Charleston (WV) at home by a final score of 71-57 on Wednesday evening.
Defense led to offense to start the game, as sophomore Emilee Weakley earned herself a steal, setting graduate Maggie Sharp up for an easy layup in the paint. Charleston didn't get on the board until just about two minutes into the game, tying the game at two apiece. On the next possession, Weakley scored her first points of the game, draining an elbow jumper and getting fouled on the play, going on to convert the and-one. The Golden Eagles proceeded to score back-to-back baskets to take their first lead of the game 6-5. Trading leads back and forth, a trey from Weakley gave Frostburg the lead, starting a 7-1 Bobcat run. Up 15-11, graduate Ciara Thomas got in on the scoring, converting an and-one, followed by Weakley and junior Harley Herndon each scoring to end the quarter with Frostburg up 25-15.
Two free throws from Weakley opened the second, as for the next three and a half minutes both teams exchanged turnovers, steals, and missed shots. It wasn't until the 6:24 mark that the Bobcats would score again, as Weakley burst through the lane for a layup. UC scored their first points of the quarter just under the six minute mark, making the score 29-17. With both teams going through another scoring drought, Weakley connected on two more free throws and freshman Alanna Tate scored two buckets, as a low scoring quarter for both teams allowed FSU to lead 35-27 at the half.
Weakley scored the first basket of the second half off a nice feed from Tate down low. Charleston answered right away with their first basket, then proceeded to score from deep, before the Bobcats went on a 9-0 run to go up 46-32 with 6:22 left in the quarter. UC broke the offensive spark for Frostburg, scoring five straight points of their own, before Tate converted a three-point play and Weakley scooped in a layup and back-to-back threes off assists from Herndon and Thomas, blowing the game open for a 57-37 advantage. Charleston went on to score five points as time ran out in the third, as FSU led 57-42 heading into the fourth and final quarter.
The Golden Eagles kicked off the fourth with a layup in the paint, as freshman Jenna Muha answered right back with a three from behind the arc. Both teams traded buckets back and forth, as UC was able to get within 19 just under the halfway mark. Another deep three from Weakley put the Bobcats up 67-55 before a layup from UC brought the game back to a 20 point advantage for FSU. In the last two minutes of play, Muha scored four more points, two from the free throw line and two from inside the paint, as the Bobcats kept Charleston scoreless, with Frostburg coming out on top 71-57.
On offense, Weakley led all scorers with 40 points, the sixth most scored in a single game in FSU history, on 13-for-24 from the field, 5-for-7 from behind the arc, and a perfect 9-for-9 from the charity stripe, to go along with six rebounds. Tate finished with 11 points, nine rebounds, four assists, and three steals, as Muha pulled in a game-high 17 rebounds, blowing past her previous high of nine. The win marked FSU's first-ever victory over the Golden Eagles since joining the MEC in 2019.
With the win, Frostburg improves to 4-2 on the season, while Charleston drops to 2-5. The Bobcats will travel on the road Saturday, December 2 to face West Virginia State at 2 PM. For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
