Covey Sets All-Time Single Game Save Record in Men's Lacrosse's Close Loss to Wilmington

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Frostburg State Men's Lacrosse team fell on Homewood Field at John Hopkins on Tuesday night, playing host to Wilmington in the 9-7 loss.

Wilmington wasted no time getting on the board, winning the faceoff and taking it right down field for a 1-0 strike 50 seconds into the contest.  The Wildcats continued their tempo, succeeding on the next faceoff, but coughed it up as sophomore Ryder Walker caused the turnover.  That set up senior Blaine Karotko for Frostburg's first attempt at goal, but he was sent away by the keeper.  As WU headed the other way, the Wildcats snuck in another goal for a 2-0 advantage.  Sophomore JT Calhoun and Karotko fired away a duo of shots for the Bobcats, but neither were able to go.  Senior Logan Covey denied Wilmington on their next try at a score, earning his first save of the night.  Sophomore Jack Hooks ripped a few shots for FSU, with sophomore Luke Roach earning a CT and setting himself up for an opportunity on the other end, but aimed off target.  Senior Wesley Phillips took his first shot of the day but was unable to connect on Frostburg's final look of the quarter, as Covey racked up three more saves to sit the game at 2-0 after one.

WU continued their early momentum to start the second, as Covey swatted away the Wildcats first two attempts, but Wilmington was able to get their third to go for a 3-0 game.  Just over three minutes into the quarter, Frostburg finally got on the board with junior Graham Allison finding the back of the net.  Covey denied another trio of shots from the Wildcats, helping sophomore Baylor Davis and freshman Kobe Link to send in back-to-back shots for the Bobcats, both that missed.  Junior Christian Killoran got in on the defensive stats for FSU, causing a turnover from WU as Covey continued to work in goal as well.  With 5:55 left in the half, defense led to offense, as off a Covey save, Phillips was able to strike one by WU's goalie for a 3-2 score.  Senior Gregg Dort Jr. then won the next faceoff, racing down field to try and tie the game, but fired just high.  Another save from Covey set up sophomore Luke Aspnes for a try at goal, but he was denied.  On Frostburg's next attempt at goal, Phillips fed Aspnes who was able to get his next one to go for a tie game at 3-3.  Phillips was inches away from giving the Bobcats the lead at the half, with his next opportunity hitting the post, as with a 1:02 left before the break, Wilmington got one to go to lead 4-3 at the half.

FSU came out ready to play in the third, as senior Alex Walstrum succeeded in the X, setting up Frostburg for a quick strike by Roach to tie the game back up at 4-4.  Dort Jr. looked to keep the momentum going for the Bobcats by winning the next faceoff, as Hooks sent his attempt wide on Frostburg's next look.  Covey once again denied the first two strikes of WU, before Wilmington got the go-ahead goal by once again to sit in front 5-4 almost halfway into the third.  Frostburg struggled to set up their offense and get in a routine as the quarter went on, not seeing a shot for almost five minutes.  Senior Tyrin Long and Roach each sent in a shot for FSU to end the quarter, but the Wildcats were able to add to their lead to hold a 6-4 edge heading into the fourth.

Covey knocked away Wilmington's first three tries at goal in the fourth, as Calhoun ripped the first shot of the quarter for the Bobcats but was blocked by WU's defense.  Junior Hayden Tyler was credited with a caused turnover, setting up a shot from Davis, who missed wide.  Almost five minutes in, the Wildcats added to their lead for a 7-4 score.  Off the faceoff that was won by Walstrum, Davis was finally able to get one in the back of the net for FSU's first goal of the fourth and a 7-5 score read.  Dort Jr. picked up the next faceoff, as on the very next play, Davis struck again to get Frostburg within one with just over 10 to play.  Covey kept the Bobcats within one, as Davis tried another one but sent it wide.  Both teams traded shots until the 5:49 mark, when WU slipped one in to go up by two, 8-6.  Two minutes later, sophomore Henry Sykes got on the board off an assist from Aspnes to get FSU back within one for an 8-7 score.  Roach, Davis, and Calhoun all tried to send in the tying goal, but none were able to get anything by.  With under a minute left in regulation, Wilmington added an insurance goal to their score, allowing the final 39 seconds to tick down to hand the Bobcats the 9-7 loss.

Daivs led Frostburg with two goals, while five others provided one, and Aspnes and Phillips received an assist each.  Covey finished the night with a career-high 24 saves, setting the new record for most saves in a single game in program history, surpassing the record of Tyler Haines, who saw 22 saves in a game during 2013 and 2014.

With the loss, Frostburg drops to 2-3 on the season, while Wilmington picks up their first win for a 1-3 record.  The Bobcats return home for their first ECC game of the season, welcoming D'Youville to Bobcat Stadium on Saturday, March 15 at 1 PM.  For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
