Mwehu, McDonald, Bernier, Layman Take Top-Four Placements at Wilkes Open

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Frostburg State Women's Wrestling team placed fourth overall at the Wilkes Open on Sunday, with four athletes taking top-four spots.

Freshman Chaniah Bernier continued her strong start to the season, taking home the 180-lb championship. She began her run with a pair of pinfalls to reach the semifinals, where she was able to overturn a 9-5 deficit in the final minute to a 9-9 tie, winning by scoring the final four points. In the championship bout, Bernier dominated in a pinfall victory for her second consecutive title after winning the 180 B bracket in Adrian last weekend.

Joining her in a podium finish was freshman Morgan Layman, who secured third overall in the 117 bracket. Her day didn't start out on the front foot, as she fell in her first bout by pinfall, dropping immediately into the consolation bracket. From there, she found her footing, earning three pins and a pair of tech falls to reach the third-place match. Facing off against the two seed in the tournament, Layman was able to take a 9-4 decision for her sixth consecutive victory.

FSU rounded out their day with a pair of fourth-place finishes, the first coming from freshman Kenaya Mwehu at 110 lbs. She earned a pinfall win in her first round before a 10-0 tech fall in the quarterfinals, however came up short against the top seed and eventual champion in the semis. Being put into the consolation semifinals, she took an 8-0 decision before just losing out by decision 6-6, with her opponent taking a pair of points with 30 seconds left in the bout.

At 124, freshman Ella McDonald took a pin and a convincing 11-2 decision before losing out to the two seed and eventual champion in the semifinals. She then took another pinfall in the consolation semis but was pinned in the third-place bout.

Frostburg will next take part in the Jersey City Quad duals, facing off against New Jersey City, Alvernia, and Utica on Saturday, November 22. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
