Women's Basketball Topped by Fighting Falcons in Weekend Road Contest

FAIRMONT. W.Va. – The Frostburg State Women's Basketball team dropped their road contest to Fairmont State on Saturday afternoon with a final score of 86-66.
 
Fairmont got the first points of the game to fall with a layup in the paint, before senior Emilee Weakley and graduate Sarah Shamdeen laid in the first four points for Frostburg.  Over the next minute, the Bobcats went up 6-2 with senior Taylor Smith getting on the board, as Shamdeen weaved her way in the lane for another bucket and an 8-2 start for Frostburg.  The Fighting Falcons finally got rolling, bringing the game to 10-7, before seeing an and-one for a tie game.  Weakley swished a free throw to put Frostburg ahead by one, but Fairmont went down and sunk a three to take their first lead at 13-11 with 4:30 left in the first.  Weakley tied the game again with a layup underneath, before collecting a fastbreak two to retake the lead.  Two free throws from Shamdeen saw another tie, but a triple from the Falcons moved them in front once more, as the first quarter ended with Fairmont on top 20-18. 
 
The Falcons extended their lead to open the second, taking a trio of threes for their first nine points of the quarter.  Down by 10, Weakley sunk a jumper for the Bobcats to bring the game to an eight-point differential, as Weakley scored the first three points of the quarter for Frostburg.  Both teams saw a slow minute and a half, trading turnovers and missed shots as the score remained 29-21.  The Falcons went one-for-two at the charity stripe to break the ice, as Shamdeen scooped in the first points for the Bobcats in over two minutes.  Fairmont saw their next two points also from the free throw line to increase the game to a nine-point game, until freshman Laekyn Flinn came in fresh off the bench, knocking down a triple for a 32-26 score.  Again, both teams went quiet for another minute, until each squad swapped a free throw.  The Falcons went on to earn four straight points from the foul line, as Weakley knotted the final points of the half off a jumper for a 36-29 game at the break. 
 
Again, Fairmont started off the quarter, scoring the first four points to jump ahead by 11.  Shamdeen put Frostburg on the board over a minute into the third, as her and Weakley worked to keep it a 10-point game.  Both teams continued to exchange turns at the free throw line, until freshman Julie Spinelli, Smith, and Weakley all hit shots to get the score to 46-39.  Shamdeen then converted an and-one opportunity to put the Bobcats within six, hoping to spark a rally for Frostburg.  The Falcons answered by taking the next six points, building their advantage right back up to double digits.  Fairmont pushed for a 9-0 run as the third came to a close, as Spinelli nailed a trey to put a stop to it.  Weakley saw three more points to end the quarter, also converting an and-one, but the Falcons put up a quick five more points to end the third on top 68-50. 
 
Weakley put in the first points of the fourth almost a minute into action, as the Bobcats were able to keep Fairmont scoreless until the 6:48 mark.  Both teams struggled hit shots to begin the quarter, with just Smith adding a point to Frostburg's total in the first three minutes for a 68-53 score.  Both senior Jasmine Johnson and Weakley earned points at the charity stripe for the next set of points for the Bobcats.  Sophomore Alanna Tate then saw her first points of the day in the fourth, also from the free throw line, as she was able to bring the game to a 72-57 score.  Smith laid in another bucket, before Fairmont put up eight consecutive points to increase their lead to 82-59.  Spinelli netted a three off an assist from Tate to stop the Falcons' run, as each team added four more points to their score, with Smith and Weakley knocking down the final points of the day for Frostburg, bringing the final to 86-66.
 
Weakley led all scorers with 26 points, shooting 8-for-16 from the floor and 9-for-11 from the free throw line, while also grabbing nine rebounds.  Spinelli (13) and Samdeen (12) were also in double figures (12), while Smith provided nine points. 
 
With the loss, Frostburg falls to 11-7 on the season, while Fairmont improves to 15-3.  The Bobcats return home for their next game, hosting Glenville State on Wednesday, January 29 at 5:30 PM.  For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
