FAIRMONT, W.Va. – The Frostburg State Acrobatics & Tumbling team lost their MEC Tournament semifinal matchup to Glenville State 252.815-249.005 on Friday afternoon.
Starting out in the Compulsory event, GSU took the first two heats with scores of 9.275 and 9.70, but the Bobcats came back with wins in the Toss (9.225) and Tumbling (8.15) heats to split the event with the Pioneers holding a narrow 35.675-35.575 advantage. Glenville widened the gap in the Acro event, outscoring FSU 9.525-7.70 in the 5-Element while also getting ahead 9.375-9.125 in the 7-Element. Frostburg was able to take the 6-Element 9.35-9.175 but GSU won by nearly two full points at 28.075-26.175.
Frostburg held the highest overall score in the Pyramid event with a 9.80 in the Open heat, but the Pioneers didn't score below a 9.675 in any of their heats, securing another event win at 29.15-28.475. At the halftime break, Glenville had extended their lead up to 90.225-92.90.
The GSU advantage seemed as if it would continue after putting up a 9.425 in the 450 Salto Toss, but FSU recovered by winning the next two heats, including a 9.20 out of a possible 9.50 in the Open heat, earning their first event win narrowly 27.05-27.025. The Tumbling event was fairly even throughout, as Glenville took three heats to Frostburg's two, while tying in the Quad Pass. Despite not winning on overall heats, the Bobcats were able to take the event 48.30-48.25 thanks to a 7.40-6.075 advantage in the Trio Pass and senior Nia Ivanov's 9.275 out of 9.75 in the Open Pass.
Still down by almost two points going into the Team event, FSU put up an 83.43 in hopes of doing enough to pull closer. The Pioneers had other ideas, scoring an 84.64 to take the victory 252.815-249.005 and advance into their first MEC Championship meet since 2019.
With the loss, Frostburg ends their season at 4-6, while Glenville improves to 8-2. FSU still has a chance to bring home some hardware from the championships, as they will compete in seven heats during the Event Finals on Saturday, April 12 at 11 a.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
