NCAA Announces Addition of Women's Wrestling as 91st Championship
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – With Frostburg State Women's Wrestling dominating in their second-ever season in the emerging sport, the NCAA announced on Friday that Divisions I, II, and II approved the addition for Women's Wrestling to be its 91st championship sport.
Approved at the Association's annual convention this week in Nashville, Tennessee, Women's Wrestling now advances from the NCAA Emerging Sports for Women program to a national collegiate championship, where the opportunity will give female athletes another chance to compete, with all three divisions competing against each other.
Frostburg has put their name on the map in just two seasons, currently holding a 10-1 record in the 2024-25 season, while also having competed in two opens and two tournaments. During the year, the Bobcats have been ranked first in Region 4 of the NCWWC, as well as capping a top-25 spot in the NWCA National Team Rankings. Frostburg is set to host their second-ever Bobcat Open on Saturday, February 1, hosting several teams and wrestlers for competition.
FSU has multiple athletes that are making marks on the program, with multiple names seeing regional rankings in their respective weight classes all throughout the season. After earning a trip to the NCWWC National Tournament just a year ago, sophomore Jada Fowler was ranked 10th in the NWCA NCAA Preseason National Rankings, while moving up to seventh place throughout competition. Junior Solana Mottola made an appearance in the National Rankings for a ninth-place seat in her first year as a Bobcat, while sophomore Jocelyn Cacek was named NCCA Women's Wrestler of the Month for Region 4, announced by the NWCA for the month of November, where she showed a 16-3 overall record, collecting multiple wins over ranked opponents that month.
In plans of sending athletes to both the NCWWC Regional and National Tournament this year, Frostburg will look to make their mark in the NCAA's first Women's Wrestling Championship in 2026.
