Third Quarter Score Gives Slippery Rock Win Over Field Hockey
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Frostburg State field hockey team dropped a tight road game to Slippery Rock by a 1-0 score.
Both the Rock and the Bobcats went into the game looking for its first win in the PSAC, as FSU defeated SRU earlier in the year in a non-conference match-up 2-1.
Frostburg had the first look at goal with an early shot from sophomore Rachel Young that went wide of goal, with freshman Caroline Earnshaw following suit five minutes later. With their first look at goal, Slippery Rock earned a corner but put the ball wide as well. In the 11th minute, FSU earned a corner that led to shots on goal from junior Emma Price and then Mikyla Rineer, but a combination of keeper Leah Riegling and a defensive stop on the line kept them out. A minute later, Price had another shot stopped by Riegling as the quarter ended at 0-0.
The second quarter was a fairly even draw between the teams, with both struggling for opportunities at goal. The Rock had two corners and a pair of shots that were both blocked by the FSU defense, as the game was still tied at zero at halftime.
FSU came out strong to start the third frame, as Rineer drew and early Riegling save while senior Paige Leitzel went just wide. Five minutes in, following a corner, Young had another opportunity that she put off target before SRU began to flip the field. The Rock would earn back-to-back corners, with senior Zoe Barnes making saves on both. Over the next four minutes, Slippery Rock would take four more shots and Barnes would come up with saves on each. With just under 30 seconds remaining before the next break, a shot got deflected into the path of Coral Piramo, who was able to finally get past Barnes for a 1-0 advantage. .
The Rock had a great chance to double their lead five minutes into the final quarter, as Barnes made a save but at the cost of a penalty stroke. She was equal to that one as well, however, keeping her team in the game. Off another SRU corner, Barnes continued to stand tall with another stop, but FSU wasn't able to get going at the other end of the field, ending in a 1-0 loss.
Slippery Rock held a 13-8 advantage in shots, with ten on goal to Frostburg's four.
With the loss the Bobcats are now 2-11 on the year, while the Rock moves to 5-7. FSU will next host Millersville this Saturday, October 18 at 1 PM. For more information visit frostburgsports.com.
