Late Bloomsburg Goal Downs Women's Lacrosse in Back-and-Forth Affair
FROSTBURG, Md. – Bloomsburg scored a last-minute goal to earn a 10-9 win over the Frostburg State Women's Lacrosse team on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore Abbey Warner began the game by taking the opening draw to set the Bobcats up on offense, where after just one minute, classmate Gianna Leonardi worked her way around the right side of the net for a solo goal. After BU took the next draw, senior Nicole Gray picked up her first save of the afternoon before both teams turned the ball over twice apiece. It would be the Huskies to take advantage of the miscues, scoring after an FSU giveaway then taking the draw and making it back-to-back goals 30 seconds apart.
Frostburg came right back, with junior Sydney Stone earning the draw, leading to classmate Neila Haney getting a free position goal. Bloomsburg goalkeeper Lauren Foley kept the Bobcats from adding on, making a pair of saves, while at the other end, Gray made one of her own, but the rebound fell straight to Emily Gauker to make it a 3-2 Husky lead. Once again BU took the draw, but caused turnovers from seniors Megan Keller and Kerri Hayes put FSU back on offense, where Haney and graduate Camden DeMaio netted back-to-back free position chances. Bloomsburg responded quickly again, needing just over 20 seconds to even things up, then after two more Gray saves, found the go-ahead goal with a minute left to end the first up 5-4.
BU was shown a yellow card to end the first, as Stone took advantage just 12 seconds in on a feed from junior Emily Lamoreaux to get back to a tie score. Foley again came up with a couple fine saves to prevent the Bobcats from taking the lead, as Bloomsburg set up their offense for a Tori Bruno goal and a 6-5 score. After a Foley save, junior Izzy Kelly prevented a Husky counterattack with a caused turnover, as Lamoreaux earned a free position and fired home for another tie. Defense took over for the next 10 minutes, as Gray and Foley each made a string of saves, while Kelly and Gray combined for three CT's, the latter of which led to a man-down Haney solo score, as the half ended 7-6 in favor of FSU.
Going into the second half, both defenses were determined to keep their teams in it, with the netminders making a combined four saves while Keller, senior Delaney Devers and junior Jessie Bare each came up with a caused turnover. It wasn't until the final three minutes of the quarter when Bloomsburg fired home a pair of quickfire goals that the deadlock was broken, as the visitors took an 8-7 lead into the fourth.
The Huskies came out with some extended pressure to start the final frame, hitting the post and forcing Gray into a save before breaking through three minutes in for a 9-7 advantage. FSU was denied twice by the post and Foley, seeking a way back into the game for the next four minutes. Bare helped spark a quick transition by knocking the ball free, as Hayes gathered and got the clear, where DeMaio passed ahead to senior Julia Badolato for a 9-8 contest. The Bobcats were able to fend off a yellow card thanks in part to a Lamoreaux CT, as with four minutes to go, DeMaio was fouled for a free position chance, which she took to even the score. On a pair of occasions, Frostburg thought they had taken the lead, but DeMaio was denied by Foley and Haney stepped in the crease just before finding the back of the net. With a minute to go, Bruno turned provider to a cutting Emily Simpson, putting the ball past Gray for a one-goal lead. FSU got the resulting draw but couldn't get a shot away, as BU escaped with the 10-9 win.
Haney led all scorers with a trio of goals, as DeMaio added a pair of scores and an assist to tie at three points apiece. Kelly, Bare, and Keller all had at least three caused turnovers and groundballs in the defensive effort, while Gray picked up five GB's to go with nine saves.
With the loss, Frostburg falls to 1-1 on the year, while BU starts their season 1-0. FSU remains in Bobcat Stadium to face Gannon on Friday, February 28 at 4 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
