Goals By Rebuck, Davis Earn Women's Soccer Shutout Win Over WVWC

BUCKHANNON, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Women's Soccer team secured a 2-0 shutout victory over West Virginia Wesleyan on the road Sunday afternoon.

FSU's first chance of the game came just over five minutes in, as sophomore Mollie Rebuck showed some great hold-up play to send a through ball to senior Carly Gillette, but her effort from distance went wide of net. Three minutes later, senior Mary Greco leapt highest to meet a long free kick, but her flicked header was just off the mark.

The opportunities continued to come Frostburg's way, as Gillette fired again from the top of the box after being found by senior Morgan Mrizek but was too close to keeper Maite Coutinho. Just 50 seconds later, FSU's pressure paid off, as Greco broke into midfield to win possession before playing a great one-two with Rebuck, as the latter had a shot cannon off the post before putting home the rebound for a 1-0 lead.

Over the next 10 minutes, Frostburg had chance after chance at goal, but three efforts went high while another was put just wide of the post. It took over midway through the half for WVWC to register their first shot, which turned out to be a 30-yard rocket towards the top right corner, but sophomore keeper Kayla Doty was equal to it, tipping over the bar. Doty was then helped out by her defense from the resulting corner, with Greco making a goal-line clearance to preserve the lead.

Wesleyan's next shot went well over the bar, then Rebuck had a great chance to double the lead, running onto a ball over the top and getting into the penalty area, but Coutinho stood tall to deny her. The final 15 minutes of the half went by with relatively little action, as the only shot came from Gillette curling a free kick just over the bar from right outside the box.

WVWC earned a corner kick eight minutes into the second half, but the resulting header was placed wide of the mark. Five minutes later, it was Frostburg's chance at a corner, where the ball took a couple deflections on its path to sophomore Rayiah Davis, who reacted quickly enough to finish home for a 2-0 advantage.

FSU kept the pressure up with a great ball by Davis into the path of senior Hannah Clagett, but she couldn't get her shot on target. With just over 20 minutes remaining, Wesleyan generated their first shot of the half, a free kick a few feet over the bar. As WVWC pressed for a way back into the game, Doty made a fairly easy catch to her left side on a shot from deep, as the hosts' final chance of the game came on another effort well wide of goal for the 2-0 final.

Frostburg held a 12-7 advantage in shots, with four on target to Wesleyan's two.

With the win, FSU improves to 7-4-2, while WVWC drops to 5-6-2. Frostburg remains on the road as they travel to West Liberty on Wednesday, October 22 for a 7 p.m. match. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
