Acrobatics & Tumbling Drops NCATA Quarterfinal to #2 Quinnipiac
FAIRMONT, W.Va. – In their second consecutive appearance at the NCATA National Tournament, the Frostburg State Acrobatics & Tumbling team fell in their quarterfinal matchup to No. 2 Quinnipiac by a final of 266.690-246.430.
Quinnipiac made their impact from the start, taking all compulsory events, leading with their highest scores of 9.800 in the toss heat and 9.725 in the pyramid heat. Frostburg's highest also came in the pyramid and toss heats, with a 9.625 in the former and a 9.475 in the latter, as QU held a 37.575-35.525 overall advantage.
With a close battle in the acro event, FSU took the 6-element with a 9.325 score, compared to Quinnipiac's 9.250. QU outscored Frostburg in both the 5-element and 7-element with performances of 9.625 and 9.600, with FSU putting up a 9.375 and an 8.775, allowing Quinnipiac to add to their lead of 66.050-63.000. Both teams put up terrific scores of 9.300 or higher in all pyramid heats, with QU coming out on top in all heats once again, posting a 9.625 in both the inversion and synchronized heats, following with an almost perfect 9.900 open, for a 29.150 total in the event. Frostburg went for a 28.325 score in the event, posting a 9.300, 9.450, and 9.575 in that order to trail Quinnipiac 95.200-91.325 at the half.
QU came out of the break hot, sweeping the toss event with a 9.525, 9.300, and 9.350 performance, compared to FSU's 8.725, 8.800, and 9.400. With over a five-point lead, Quinnipiac held the advantage in the tumbling event, with an overall score of 54.375, compared to Frostburg's 49.850, where both teams' highest showings came in the aerial pass and 6-element pass. FSU scored a 9.425 in the aerial and a 9.175 in the 6-element, with QU knotting a 9.600 and a 9.725, also hitting a high-score of 9.700 in the open pass, to increase their lead to 177.750-168.100.
Finishing the meet with the team event, Quinnipiac scored 88.940 with Frostburg coming in with a 78.330, bringing QU's total to 266.690 and FSU's total to 246.430, advancing Quinnipiac to Friday's semifinals.
With the loss, Frostburg finishes their season 7-3, while Quinnipiac improves their undefeated record to 7-0, as they await the winner of No. 3 Gannon and No. 6 Azusa Pacific Frostburg will wait to see if they qualify for any event finals being held on Sunday, April 28 at 11 a.m. For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
