Salvadge's Goal Guides Men's Soccer to Comeback Victory Over Tigers
FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Men's Soccer team picked up a 2-1 comeback victory at home over Salem on Wednesday evening.
Salem started with the ball to kick off, as both teams pushed a little too early down field, each getting called offside in the first four minutes. On SU's next break-away at goal, the Tigers moved it around Frostburg's defense perfectly, setting them up for a look at goal, knotting the first score of the game for a 1-0 lead. Less than a minute later, Salem tried again at goal, as senior Brennan Moore picked up his first save. After 10 minutes of back and forth play, FSU was set up with throw in on the far side, sending senior Caleb Dell to throw it in. Dell launched the ball into the box, as a header from senior Abdur-Rahman Neama put the ball at the feet of freshman Andrew Denard, who was able to sneak the ball into the back of the net for a tie game with less than 30 minutes left in the half.
Both teams then traded strikes at goal, with senior Alex Retzos and Neama both sending their shots over top. Frostburg dominated possession as time went on, keeping the ball in their offensive half, trying to work their way into the lead. With under 10 to play in the first, Salem took a chance at a score that was sent off target, as senior Laki Psallidas sent in a shot from outside the box that went right over top of the goal, leaving the game a 1-1 tie at the half.
The Tigers saw the first chance at offense to start the second, sending one of their shots over top. FSU later on put together a run down field as freshman Dominic Good sent a perfect low ball into the box from the left side, allowing freshman Mason Salvadge to send the ball into the opposite side of the net for a 2-1 Bobcat lead. Five minutes later, Salvadge had himself another shot at goal, striking it hard but the keeper was able to make a save on it. Good tried a chance at goal for his first shot of the day, prior to the Tigers regaining possession and sending two shots in on target, both that were knocked away by Moore.
Salvadge and Good continued to apply pressure upfront, each finding ways to rip shots at goal. Moore made another save, as SU kept attempting to tie the game up once again but were able to do so. With time winding down in Frostburg's favor, Salem earned a corner kick and was able to create a shot but sent it just off target. FSU was then given a corner with under five minutes left to play, as the Bobcats were able to move the ball around and keep possession to come out on top with the 2-1 win.
Both teams were evenly matched on offense, each taking 12 shots at goal. Salem had the edge in corner kicks 5-4, while Moore made a game-high four saves.
With the win, Frostburg improves to 3-1 on the season, while Salem drops to 1-4. The Bobcats go on the road next to face No. 20 Davis & Elkins on Sunday, September 22 at 2 PM. For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
