Haney Tallies Hat Trick in Women's Lacrosse's Loss to Shepherd

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – The Frostburg State Women's Lacrosse team lost on the road to the Shepherd Rams on Wednesday afternoon, falling by a final score of 15-6. 

Frostburg started the game of by causing a turnover, leading to senior Kerri Hayes taking the first shot of the game. The Rams would then clear the ball, taking the ball down field successfully for their first goal of the game to go up 1-0. The Bobcats would answer just under four minutes into the game, when junior Neila Haney sent one into the back of the net. Shepherd dominated the last six minutes of the quarter, scoring four more goals to take a 5-1 lead after one. 

Haney opened the second quarter by taking the draw for FSU, as graduate Camden DeMaio added another goal to Frostburg's total to make the game 5-2.  Freshman Megan Gray and junior Sydney Stone ripped back-to-back shots for the Bobcats, trying to keep the team's momentum, but both were off the mark.  Almost four minutes into the quarter, SU tacked on another goal, their first of the second, to go up 6-2.  Shepherd worked quickly on their next attempt, scooping up the draw control and bolting down field to extend their advantage to five.  The Rams added one more goal to their lead before senior Nicole Gray was credited with a save.  SU jumped out on in front 9-2 around the eight minute mark, as Frostburg struggled to get the ball into their offensive half for a shot  Haney, Stone, and DeMaio all worked to get off a shot as the half ended, with senior Julia Badolato and junior Emily Lamoreaux attempting one as well.  Gray recorded one more save in the quarter, as Shepherd led 10-2 at the the break.  

The Rams quickly showed their momentum from the first half to open the second, scoring their first goal of the third not quite two minutes in.  Hayes fired away a shot for FSU's first of the quarter around two minutes later, but was denied by SU's keeper.  Gray stood tall in goal on Shepherd's next attempt, setting up senior Natalie Crawford for a try at goal down on the other end.  The Bobcats struggled to keep up with the Rams offense, as SU totaled two more goal in the quarter to sit ahead 13-2 heading into the fourth.  

Haney started FSU out strong in the fourth, knotting a goal off a free position opportunity.  DeMaio looked to keep the energy going for Frostburg on her next look at goal, but was denied.  Gray batted away Shepherd's first look of the quarter, as Lamoreaux then tucked one in around the midway mark, also off a free position for a 13-4 game.  Both teams battled back and forth for the next minute, until DeMaio fed Haney for another goal for the Bobcats.  Frostburg kept the Rams scoreless in the quarter until the 3:41 mark, when SU connected to go up 14-5.  Lamoreaux dished to DeMaio, who swapped final goals with SU as time ticked out for a 15-6 final.  

Haney knotted a hat trick on the day to lead the Bobcats offensively, while DeMaio was next with two goals and an assist.  Gray was credited with eight saves in goal.

With the loss, Frostburg falls to 3-4 on the season, while Shepherd moves to 4-2. FSU will play again when they travel to Lock Haven on Saturday, March 15 for a 12 PM start. For more information visit frostburgsports.com
