Weakley, Snyder Reach Double Figures in Women's Basketball's Team Effort Win Over Tigers

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Women's Basketball team surged past Salem at home on Wednesday evening by a final score 90-47.

Frostburg got on the board first with senior Emilee Weakley knocking down a free throw, as over a minute later, Salem put in a driving layup for a 2-1 game.  Both teams traded missed baskets for the next few minutes, before graduate Sarah Shamdeen broke the silence with a fastbreak layup and another Bobcat lead.  FSU took the next two buckets with Weakley earning the points for a 7-2 game.  Freshman Julie Spinelli then knocked down a three, before Weakley put in two more free throws to jump ahead 12-4.  After the Tigers scored underneath, Frostburg went on a 7-0 run, increasing their lead to 19-6 with senior Taylor Smith and sophomore Alanna Tate getting in on the scoring action.  Tate hit a layup with under a minute left in the first, with freshman Syndey Snyder nailing a three to end the quarter with FSU in command 24-8.

SU put in two free throws to open up the second, before Weakley responded with seven points of her own, pushing the game to 31-10.  The Tigers scored another two underneath, as the Bobcats kept having an answer, with sophomore Grace Middleton getting in her two first points at the charity stripe.  Middleton worked her way for a layup underneath the basket, before both teams went silent for around two minutes, until Tate provided a layup for FSU as well.  Shamdeen also put up a layup to add to the Bobcats' score, before Salem found themselves with back-to-back scores of their own.  Shamdeen sunk two more free throws for FSU, leaving the score at 41-16 at the break.

Smith started off the scoring in the third, with Frostburg seeing the first seven points of the quarter, moving their lead to 48-16.  Salem took their first points of the third in the paint, with Weakley trading the next few scores with SU.  Smith nailed a triple from behind the arc, as well did Weakley, seeing the game at 59-24.  The Tigers put up an attempt in the paint that found the bottom of the net, as Weakley, Shamdeen, and Smith combined for a trio of FSU buckets, moving the Bobcats to a 65-24 edge.  Spinelli swapped the last bucket of the quarter with Salem, as SU put up the final score of the third, setting the game at 67-28.

Salem struck first to begin the fourth, as Snyder converted an and-one to start off the fourth for the Bobcats.  Senior Harley Herndon was given a layup in the paint, as the Tigers knocked down a jumper on the other end.  Snyder was fouled on her next attempt from deep, adding three more points to her total, sinking all three free throws.  Sophomore Oliva Looker showed an easy two close to the basket as well, as Middleton continued to work on defense, earning herself the steal and the fastbreak layup at the other end for a 79-32 score with 7:12 left in regulation.  Both Looker and Middleton saw two more scores each, before freshman Ayla Hileman sunk a three from outside for an 84-36 score.  SU converted an and-one on their own side of the court, but Snyder took the three points right back, knotting another trey of her own.  Salem worked for a duo of buckets as time went on, as Looker and Herndon laid in the final points of the night for Frostburg, leaving the final score at 90-47 in favor of the Bobcats.

Weakley led all scorers with 32 points, shooting 12-for-17 from the floor and 4-for-5 from the three-point line, while also pulling down six rebounds.  Snyder was next with a career-high 12 points, while Smith finished with nine points and six assists.

With the win, Frostburg improves to 16-9 on the season, while Salem drops to 1-26.  The Bobcats next go on the road to Point Park for a 2 PM contest on Saturday, February 22.  For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
