Fernandez Header, Paige's Second Half Strike Lead Women's Soccer to Win Over WU
FROSTBURG, Md. - The Frostburg State Women's Soccer team scored once in each half to defeat Wheeling at home 2-0 on Wednesday evening.
Under cold and rainy conditions in Bobcat Stadium, both teams struggled to get shots on target early on despite getting several chances. Sophomore Mollie Rebuck had the game's first effort just 30 seconds in, a long shot from distance that went wide before the Cardinals did the same three minutes later. After receiving a cross from the right side, Rebuck did well to control the ball in the box and generate another shooting chance but again couldn't put it on goal.
Over the next 25 minutes, FSU racked up five corner kicks, however their only two efforts came from sophomore Ellie Fiedler putting a half-volley over the bar and freshman Audrey Meadows having a header blocked before reaching goal. On their sixth corner of the half, Frostburg finally made it count, as senior Carly Gillette sent the ball to the middle of the box, where sophomore Elena Fernandez rose highest to meet it and power her header past Akyla Walcott in goal.
The Bobcats then went on the ascendancy, as just a couple minutes later, Rebuck thought she had doubled the advantage on a shot going towards the top corner, however Walcott got a hand to it to tip it over the bar. Gillette kept the momentum up with one effort stopped by Walcott off a corner and another cleared off the line four minutes later. As the half entered its final stages, Fernandez made a 30-yard dribbling run down the right wing and played a perfect cross to Rebuck, who looked to curl into the far post but was denied by Walcott flying to her right to put the ball out for a corner. In the final three minutes, Rebuck and senior Jayme Sooy put shots either side of the goal, headed to the break at 1-0.
FSU looked to keep the chances coming in the second period, with sophomore Ana Davis putting a shot high within the first minute. Wheeling was able to respond, however, getting a pair of great chances to equalize a minute apart. A giveaway at the back gave Maira Alevato a wide-open look from the top of the 18, but she fired straight at junior Mia Graff in net, while Caryn Goins then ripped a powerful shot that stung the palms of Graff as she collected the rebound as well.
Frostburg was able to withstand the pressure and create another opportunity of their own, with sophomore Cassidy Paige putting a shot just too close to Walcott. As the game entered the final half hour, WU had another solid opportunity after earning a corner kick, however senior Skylar Ehart put enough pressure on Rosie Caley to misplace her header wide and maintain the advantage. Neither side managed a shot for the next 25 minutes, with the Bobcats looking to limit Wheeling's attacking chances and the visitors unable to threaten Graff in goal.
With six minutes on the clock, FSU got their insurance goal, as senior Morgan Mrizek showed great determination in keeping the ball in play right on the end line, as her cross bounced off the hands of Walcott and into the path of Paige, who tapped home for a 2-0 advantage. Mrizek then attempted to score herself but her left-footed shot from the edge of the box lacked enough power to beat Walcott, as the clock hit zero on the two-goal victory.
The Bobcats held a 15-4 advantage in shots, with eight on goal to the Cardinals' two while earning their fourth consecutive shutout.
With the win, Frostburg improves to 9-4-3 overall, while Wheeling drops to 3-9-4. FSU next hits the road for a non-conference match against Salem (WV) on Saturday, November 1 at 2:30 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
