Field Hockey Sees Six Different Goalscorers in Dominant Senior Day Victory

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Field Hockey team dominated D'Youville in their final game of Homecoming Weekend, as the team took down the Saints 6-1 on Senior Day.

Prior to the start of the game, Frostburg recognized their seven seniors of Zoe Reading, Lina Goetz, Ashlyn Cave, Ava Waddell, Olivia Wenzel, Femke Hofkamp, and Emilie Bonhivert for rounding out their Bobcat careers.

Frostburg quickly got going on offense, sending the ball down field and passing it around to set up junior Paige Leitzel for a rip at goal that was blocked by D'Youville's defense.  The Saints then found themselves with an opportunity on offense at the other end, when they set up for a penalty corner.  DYU went to insert, finding themselves with back-to-back shots that were both denied by junior Zoe Barnes in goal.  Both teams traded fouls for the next several minutes, battling for possession, until Reading sent one in on target, but the Saints were credited with a defensive save.  Sending the ball back in play off the save, the Bobcats received a penalty corner, with Wenzel sending the ball right to Reading for an easy goal and a 1-0 FSU lead with around seven minutes gone in the first.  Leitzel fired in another shot right away after the score but was sent away by DYU's goalie.  Regaining possession on their offense half, Wenzel then fed sophomore Emma Price for a goal, increasing Frostburg's lead to 2-0 heading into the second quarter.

Leitzel was determined to get one in the back of cage, seeing the first shot of the second for either team.  Bonhivert then took a try at goal, but was also denied by the keeper.  With the Bobcats taking control on both sides of the field, and maintaining most of the possession throughout the quarter, Leitzel was finally able to send one past the goalie and in for a score off an assist from Reading.  With now three goals on the board, FSU looked to add to their lead, moving the ball around for sophomore Mikyla Rineer and Leitzel each to take a shot at goal, with one being blocked and one being sent wide.  D'Youville still struggled to get the ball in their offensive half and set up a play, as both Leitzel and Wenzel saw a shot to end the half, but were unable to connect, sending Frostburg into the break with a 3-0 advantage.

Sophomore Ella Esham started the third period in goal, as the Saints marched down for a penalty corner, but were unable to get a shot off.  Bonhivert quickly set up for a shot on the other end of the field, again being denied by D'Youville's keeper.  After around four minutes of no offensive action, Goetz dished to Bonhivert, who was finally able to slot if home for the Bobcats, building their lead to 4-0 with just under 10 minutes left in the third.  The Saints were able to receive another penalty corner on their offensive end, but was once again unable to connect with a shot, giving the ball back to FSU.  Frostburg took the ball down field, where Rineer was able to send one into the cage for another score and a 5-0 game.  Reading fired away one more try at goal, as D'Youville finally sent in a shot off a penalty corner that was sent just wide, sending the game into the fourth and final quarter with the Bobcats on top 5-0.

Both teams kept the start of the fourth quarter slow, seeing no action in the first several minutes.  D'Youville pushed to earn an opportunity, sending a shot into the back of the cage for the team's first score of the game.  DYU started to show some life on offense, setting up for a pair of penalty corners, and sending in another shot that was knocked away by Esham.  Frostburg then took over the ball, looking to increase their lead and get the Saints' goal back, as Wenzel inserted a penalty corner to Bonhivert, who sent her shot just wide.  After the ball was put back into play, the Bobcats saw another opportunity, where Bonhivert fed Reading for a score and a 6-1 game with just seconds left in regulation, allowing time to tick out for the 6-1 victory.

Frostburg dominated in the shot category taking 19 compared D'Youville's five, while 13 of the Bobcat's shots were on target.  The Saints held the advantage in penalty corners 7-6, while Barnes made two saves in goal and Esham made one.

With the win, Frostburg goes to 5-9 on the season, while D'Youville falls to 5-7.  The Bobcats go on the road for their next contest, facing Millersville for a conference game at 1 PM on Saturday, October 26.  For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
