INSTITUTE, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Women's Soccer team suffered their first MEC loss of the season 2-0 to West Virginia State on the road Wednesday evening.
 
Four minutes into action, FSU had the first effort of the night, as junior Carly Gillette put a shot wide. Just a minute and a half later, a Yellow Jacket counter-attack led by Billie Jean Davies found Sara Paris Filter just outside the box, as she was able to come inside on her right foot for a curling effort into the top corner for a 1-0 lead.
 
The Bobcats attempted to respond immediately, as senior Carolyn DeSena and freshman Ellie Fiedler both had shots saved by Laura Galindo in goal. Over the next 15 minutes, WVSU largely controlled the chances, getting three shots away, two of them saved by senior Katie Sterne and another going wide of the mark.
 
Frostburg had a great chance to equalize on 25 minutes, as a cross into the box found junior Jayme Sooy, but her left-footed volley was tipped over the bar by Galindo to keep her team in the lead. Within the next 10 minutes, junior Mary Greco had an effort from distance go wide, then Sooy missed right before having another volley saved by Galindo. As the half ticked down to the final two minutes, junior Skylar Ehart had on final shot from deep, as Galindo made an easy grab to preserve the shutout bid.
 
After seven minutes without a shot to start the second, Fiedler put another shot wide before Sterne made an easy save a minute later. With a half hour left to go, the Yellow Jackets got their desired insurance goal, as FSU gave the ball away in their own half, with Ellise Rennie squaring the ball to Avril Amil Ruiz in the center of goal to put away a 2-0 lead.
 
Two minutes later, senior Madi Allen tried to get one back, as Galindo gave the ball away in her own area, but she couldn't get the ball high enough over. Shortly after, Gillette tried to curl in a ball from outside the box to the near post, but was too close to Galindo, then freshman Rayiah Davis tried her luck but could only put it wide.
 
That would be the Bobcats' last chance, as WVSU controlled the final 20 minutes, not allowing another shot. The hosts attempted to add a third goal, with one shot going just wide and another saved by Sterne, with the contest ending 2-0.
 
FSU held a 13-10 advantage in shots, with eight on target to six for the Yellow Jackets.
 
With the loss, Frostburg falls to 9-2-1 on the year, while WVSU improves to 8-2-2. The Bobcats return home to face West Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday, October 20 at 1 p.m., where it will be Homecoming Weekend. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
