Halling Takes Down Nation's Top-Ranked 133-lb Wrestler in Team Loss to Gannon
FAIRMONT, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Men's Wrestling team fell to No. 5 Gannon on Sunday afternoon by a 29-10 final.
GU began the meet by taking a major decision at 125 before a top-10 bout at 133. The Golden Knights put up the nation's top-ranked wrestler by NWCA in Jeremiah Echevarria against FSU's freshman standout Tanner Halling, ranked 10th by the organization. It would be the biggest win of Halling's young career, taking an 8-4 decision victory to get the Bobcats on the board.
Sophomore Chase Bell then just missed out on another upset bid at 141, falling 11-10 to the No. 8 wrestler in Jake Niffenegger. Gannon then took a 10-4 decision at 149 before senior Nico D'Amico picked up a 10-6 decision at 157 to bring the match score to 10-6. GU ramped things up over the next four bouts, earning three tech falls and a major decision to surge ahead 29-6. Junior Gavin Bage ended the meet on a high note for FSU, earning an 8-0 major decision at 285 to bring the final to 29-10.
With the loss, Frostburg drops to 2-2 on the year and will next travel to Marymount on Wednesday, December 3 at 6 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
