Four Net Hat Tricks in Women's Lacrosse Opening Win Over Holy Family

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Women's Lacrosse team opened their season with a commanding 22-2 victory over Holy Family Wednesday afternoon.

FSU began the game on the front foot, as in the first three minutes, junior Julia Badolato scored a solo goal followed by graduate Camden DeMaio feeding junior Emily Lamoreaux for a 2-0 advantage. The following six and a half minutes saw both defenses take over, with Boss and senior Megan Keller each picking up a caused turnover and senior Nicole Gray turning away the Tigers' first attempt at goal. The Bobcats picked up their offensive pressure, forcing a pair of saves before sophomore Abbey Warner passed to senior Julia Badolato for an easy finish, followed by another from junior Sydney Stone to DeMaio and ending the scoring with a solo goal from senior Kerri Hayes. Gray made a trio of saves to end the period up 5-0.

Taking advantage of a man-up opportunity, HFU got on the board two minutes into the second frame to get within four. Just a minute and a half later, however, Frostburg kicked right back into gear as Badolato passed to senior Savanna Reitz in the middle of the arc to go back up five. Gray made a pair of impressive saves in net, including one off a free position, then the sides traded scores back-and-forth with sophomore Gianna Leonardi and Stone netting either side of a Holy family tally. The final two minutes were dominated by FSU, as Reitz was found by Lamoreaux before junior Neila Haney netted a hat trick within a minute, the last being on a senior Natalie Williams assist. Another couple Gray saves put the Bobcats ahead 12-2 at the half.

Haney opened the second half with her fourth goal of the game, then Hayes tacked on a man-up goal and Stone tallied her second with the rest of the game being played on a running clock. Frostburg's defense didn't let up, as senior Delaney Devers and sophomore Maya Mosslih picked up a pair of caused turnovers and Gray prevented another HFU goal. Warner and senior Brittyn Leonard each scored their first of the game, with Reitz then getting her hat trick to close the quarter on a Lamoreaux assist.

Senior Grace Dickey filled came on for Gray in net looking to complete the second half shutout and immediately began the fourth with a free position save. FSU notched the opening three goals with Boss, Lamoreaux and Stone all helping go above the 20-goal mark, then Hayes polished off the final at 22 with a free position score. Dickey made a further pair of saves to keep the Tigers off the board, ending the contest with a 22-2 victory.

Haney led all scorers with four goals, as Stone, Hayes, and Reitz all had a trio apiece, while DeMaio dished out a game-high three assists. Devers, Kelly, and Mosslih all aided the defensive effort with two CT's each, while junior Izzy Kelly picked up a team-high five groundballs. Gray and Dickey combined to make 14 saves on 16 shots on goal.

With the win, Frostburg begins 1-0 on the year, while Holy Family is 0-1. The Bobcats remain at home to face Bloomsburg on Saturday, February 22 at 2 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
