Men's Lacrosse Drops Final Road Game of Regular Season to #4 Griffins
GREENSBURG, Pa. – The Frostburg State Men's Lacrosse team fell in their final road game of the regular season on Wednesday, dropping their contest with No. 4 Seton Hill (Pa.) by a final score of 18-2.
Seton Hill worked quickly starting from the X, winning the face-off and firing away two quick shots that both hit the post. The Griffins were able to maintain possession until senior Landon Bruce did his part on defense, causing a turnover and giving Frostburg their first look at offense. Senior Wesley Phillips was able to maneuver around for a shot at goal but sent his attempt just wide. SHU quickly picked up the rebound and marched down for another look, but ran into senior goalie Logan Covey who was credited with his first save of the day. Sophomore Luke Aspnes traded shots with the Griffins as time went on, as Covey racked up another save. The Bobcats struggled to get the ball past midfield, as Seton Hill was able to rally for back-to-back goals to go up 2-0. Junior Matt Williams was given a CT on the defensive end, which led to shots on the opposite side from juniors Christian Killoran and Graham Allison, both which were off target. Phillips and freshman Jack Laye each sent in an attempt as the quarter rounded out with SHU putting away four goals in the final five minutes to lead 6-0 after one.
The Griffins continued their momentum in the second, striking right away off the face-off to add another one to their total. Seton Hill ripped in five more shots over three minutes, as sophomore Ryder Walter was given a caused turnover to give the ball to FSU. Off a Frostburg turnover, SHU was able to tally another one to advance the game to 8-0. Sophomore Luke Roach found himself open for a duo of tries, followed by Phillips sending in another, but all were unable to find the back of the net. Covey denied one more shot from the Griffins before Seton Hill was able to put in two more to increase their advantage to 10-0 with 4:18 left in the half. Roach and Sykes each attempted one more try at goal before the end of the quarter, as Covey collected one more save to leave the game at 10-0 at the break.
Senior Nate Jones made his way into goal to start the third, as nothing stopped SHU from putting another one on the board, netting another one off the opening face-off for an 11-0 score. With over three minutes gone in the third, Aspnes was able to get one to go for the Bobcats, sending one in off a feed from Phillips for an 11-1 game. On their third attempt during their next possession, Seton Hill got the goal back, sending another one in to move the game to 12-1. Both teams swapped turnovers, leaving Aspnes and junior Sean Mullineaux for a try at a score, but both were denied. The Griffins then took the ball down field, surging quickly for two more scores to sit the game at 14-1. Sophomore JT Calhoun was given a shot, as Jones received a save on the other end before SHU found themselves with two more additions to increase their lead to 16-1 heading into the fourth.
Mullineaux took the first shot of the fourth, as the ball stayed with FSU off the save, allowing Sykes to find Roach on a man-up opportunity to slot home another one for the Bobcats to make the score 16-2. The first shot of the quarter for Seton Hill was blocked, as senior Seamus Kearney was credited with a CT that gave Roach and Allison both an opportunity at goal, but both were unable to connect. Both teams worked back and forth, as the Griffins' next two looks were off target, with Jones standing in the way of their third attempt. Jones picked up another save as SHU aimed another shot wide, as Aspnes' next attempt was blocked down at the other end. Seton Hill was able to rack up another pair of goals in the same minute, as senior Alex Walstrum was able to fire away a shot off a face-off, but the scored remained 18-2. With under five to play, Jones racked up four more saves to deny SHU anymore scores, as the Bobcats sent in five more shots. Calhoun fired away another one, as senior Tyrin Long tried his first attempt at the day, along with Sykes and Roach sending in a trio of looks as well, but none were able to find the back of the net, leaving the final score at 18-2.
Aspnes and Roach were given the goals for Frostburg on the day, combining for a total of 11 shots. Bruce and Walstrum led the team in ground balls with three each, while Walter was credited with a team-high three CTs with Kearney and Williams right behind with a pair each. Jones made a total of eight saves in goal, while Covey finished with four.
With the loss, Frostburg falls to 6-8 on the season, while Seton Hill improves to 13-1. The Bobcats return to action on Saturday, April 26, when they host Roberts Wesleyan at 1 PM for Senior Day in the team's regular season finale. For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
