Field Hockey Loses in Road Match to #5 West Chester
WEST CHESTER, PA – The Frostburg State field hockey team dropped their road match to fifth-ranked West Chester by a final score of 8-1.
Senior Zoe Barnes got the start in goal and would have a tough test ahead of her, needing to make two saves in the first seven minutes of the opening quarter. FSU hung with West Chester until halfway through the first when the hosts found back-to-back goals to go up 2-0. The final five minutes of the period came and went without much action as the game entered the second frame.
Barnes made an early save to start things out, as there wouldn't be many other chances over the next eight minutes. WCU strung together several shots in a row, as one was blocked, another saved by Barnes, and the third finding the back of the cage for a 3-0 advantage. Frostburg responded 40 seconds later, however, as freshman Kenzie Cummins made a run downfield and found junior Mikyla Rineer to slot home her fourth goal of the season. The Golden Rams didn't let FSU get much momentum, keeping the high-scoring period going with one more goal before the half to make things 4-1. With four and a half to go, the Bobcats were able to win a corner but couldn't generate a shot out of it.
The third quarter began with a WCU shot going wide of the mark, followed four minutes later by Barnes making two saves in quick succession. With five to go, West Chester tacked on their fifth of the day to end the third up 5-1.
Frostburg had a pair of chances to start the final quarter, as junior Piper Taylor and senior Aubree Dorsey both saw shooting chances off of quarters shut down by the Golden Ram defense. After Barnes picked up another save, WCU kicked their offense up a notch, netting three times in the final nine minutes to take the 8-1 victory.
With the win, West Chester moves to 8-3 on the season, while the Bobcats are now 2-10. Frostburg faces off against Slippery Rock on the road Wednesday, October 15 at 4 PM. For more information, please visit froatburgsports.com.
