#10 Wolves Use Early Goal, Strong Fourth Quarter to Defeat Field Hockey

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Frostburg State Field Hockey team dropped their season opener to 10th-ranked Newberry by a final score of 5-0.

On their first attack of the day, the Wolves quickly opened the scoring as Emma Westbrook was found by Amber Tozana just under two minutes in for a 1-0 advantage. The Bobcats were able to recover and controlled the majority of chances the rest of the quarter.

Freshman Ava Shorkey had FSU's first attempt on target but was denied by keeper Ayanda Mangenah. Frostburg got a penalty corner just afterwards, where senior Aubrey Dorsey thought she had tied the game, but saw her effort cleared away via a Westbrook defensive save. With three minutes until the break, Leitzel lined up for a shot at goal following another corner, but was charged down before being able to make good contact.

With FSU having gotten the better chances in the first, NC swung momentum in their direction in the second frame. The opening seven minutes didn't produce much action, however the hosts piled on the pressure with a shot being blocked followed by back-to-back saves from senior Zoe Barnes. In a scramble within the arc, Tozana was finally able to apply the desired finish, putting her team ahead 2-0. Neither side managed a shot over the final eight minutes, as Newberry couldn't take advantage of a pair of corners.

The Wolves continued their second quarter dominance into the third, getting four looks at goal within the first three minutes, as a combination of Barnes and junior Morgan Sparks kept the ball from the back of the cage. The Bobcats were able to find their footing after the opening flurry, as senior Hannah Haberkorn drew a save from Mangenah.

NC continued to earn corner after corner but weren't able to capitalize on them, putting one shot wide and seeing another blocked. On a counter-attack, junior Emma Price had a goal-bound effort stopped on the line as Newberry's defense continued to hold FSU at bay. Just before the end of the quarter, the Wolves had a shot blocked to keep things at 2-0 headed to the final period.

It took just over three minutes for the Wolves to put the result in hand, as Tozana netted a pair of goals 35 seconds apart for a commanding 4-0 lead. Frostburg had just two corners the rest of the way to show on offense, with sophomore Taylor Korczynski having the lone effort blocked. Westbrook then provided an assist to Wibien Dahmen to finish the scoring at 5-0.

With the loss, Frostburg drops to 0-1 on the year, while Newberry improves to 1-0. The Bobcats remain in South Carolina to face Lander on Sunday, September 7 at Emerald High School in Greenwood at 12 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
