Field Hockey Concludes Season with Kutztown on Senior Day
FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Field Hockey team fell to No. 3 Kutztown at home on Saturday afternoon by a score of 2-0 on Senior Day.
Prior to the game, Frostburg recognized their ten seniors in Macy Layfield, Skylar Slimmer, Zoe Reading, Liz Perry, Emily Hughes, Ashlyn Cave, Mariana Day, Emilie Bonhivert, Ava Schmidt, and Maddie Wallis.
Kutztown was quick to get a shot on goal and the first penalty corner of the game, as FSU was strong on defense and knocked the ball out of the arc to the middle of the field. The Bobcats controlled the ball for a few minutes, until getting it stolen in KU's defense end. On the attack, the Golden Bears passed around Frostburg and took a few more shots on goal until one went in in the sixth minute of the quarter. In the minutes following, junior Femke Hofkamp looked at putting the ball in the net, but was denied by Kutztown's goalie Mia Kepler. Just before the first fifteen minutes ended, Schmidt took a penalty corner for FSU but was unable to come up with anything on offense.
Keeping the same momentum, KU took the first shot in the second quarter. Majority of the next twelve minutes saw no action. Both teams battled the ball towards the middle of the field, until FSU got a breakaway. Getting the ball into their offensive half, Layfield shot the ball just wide of the goal. This ended the period and sent the game into halftime with Kutztown up 1-0.
The ball started at the stick of Frostburg's offense to kick off the third quarter, as the Golden Bears took an advantage of the ball off a green card from the Bobcats. Both teams defense stepped up, as KU ripped two shots on goal, one being saved by sophomore Zoe Barnes and one going wide. To finish off the third, Layfield tried once more at goal but was denied by Kepler, as the Golden Bears remained up 1-0.
Kutztown started with the ball in the fourth and fired it up the field into scoring territory. Frostburg's frustration started to show, being given another green card. The Golden Bears looked to take advantage of the opportunity, racing down the field and firing another one into the back of the cage for a 2-0 lead with just over 10 minutes left to play. KU continued the pressure on offense, attempting three more shots, two missing wide and Barnes earning another save. With under five minutes left in regulation, FSU found a spark on office, earning two penalty corners and firing away two shots, both being turned down by Kepler, as Kutztown came out on top 2-0.
