Men's Basketball Downed By Wheeling on the Road

The Frostburg State Men's Basketball team fell to the Wheeling Cardinals on the road Saturday afternoon by a score of 88-62.

WHEELING, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Men's Basketball team fell to the Wheeling Cardinals on the road Saturday afternoon by a score of 88-62.

Wheeling got off two a quick 2-0 start before senior Cole Harshman hit a jump shot to tie it 2-2. The score tied up at four a-piece as junior Sebastian Gahse saw his shot go through before FSU took the lead with freshman Malcom day hitting his first basket of the day. WU went on a nine-point run, converting defense to offense to lead 13-6. Day stopped the run, knocking down two free throws, followed by freshman Logan Lewis also getting to the line to get within 13-10. 

WU stepped up defensively and couldn't seem to miss on offense, outscoring FSU 22-7 over the next eight minutes. Finally breaking the offensive duck, junior Robby Williams hit a three inside the final three minutes, then knocked down two from the line with the score at 35-19. He would hit a layup with 11 seconds left, but a late foul put the Cardinals at the line, where they knocked down both for a 40-22 halftime lead

Five quick points for WU was stopped by junior Kobe Baptiste getting into the lane for a layup at 45-24. Lewis then answered a Cardinal layup, with four more from WU and a three from Lewis putting the score at 51-29. Back-to-back-to-back threes from Wheeling were scored while Day had one of his own plus a jumper. WU went on yet another run, scoring 20 to FSU's 10, as senior Sean Brown, Jr. hit a jumper and had a three-point play as soon as he subbed into the game.

The Bobcats got late baskets from senior Jaylin Albury, graduate Antonio Carlisle, Williams, sophomore Dylan Long, and freshman Villius Slanina hit four free throws at the end of the game, but Wheeling outscored FSU the rest of the way, eventually winning 88-62.

Williams led with 12 points, followed by Day (9) and Lewis (8). Baptiste led the team in rebounds with eight while also picking up a pair of steals.

With the conclusion of this game, Frostburg falls to an overall record of 2-22 and a conference record of 2-15 while Wheeling moves to an overall record of 8-15 and a conference record of 5-12. The Bobcats are back in action on Wednesday February 21 at 7:30pm as they take on Notre Dame (Ohio) on the road. For more information visit frostburgsports.com.
