NDC Three-Point Shooting Leads to Win Over Men's Basketball

The Frostburg State Men's Basketball team lost to Notre Dame College on the road Wednesday night by a final score of 93-76.

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – The Frostburg State Men's Basketball team lost to Notre Dame College on the road Wednesday night by a final score of 93-76.

FSU began the game on the front foot, as senior Jaylin Albury got to the rim but couldn't finish, grabbed his own rebound and dished to freshman Zane McCarty to hit from deep to open the scoring. The Falcons came out hotter on offense, making treys on their first three scoring possessions to go with a pair of free throws and an 11-5 lead. Freshman Logan Lewis stopped the run with a bucket in the paint, then junior Koby Baptiste hit a layup and two at the charity stripe either side of a senior Jaylon Johnson triple to turn a six-point deficit into a 14-11 advantage. NDC continued to catch fire from deep, with another trio of threes part of a 13-2 run that put them ahead 24-16.

Johnson stopped a two-minute Bobcat scoring drought with a mid-range jumper, then Baptiste connected from behind the arc to pull Frostburg back within five at 29-24. Notre Dame hit yet another three before two minutes of scoreless ball, which ended when junior Robby Williams got his first field goal from distance and a 27-32 score line. NDC got each of their next four points at the line, while freshman Malcolm Day got a basket inside and junior JayShaun Freeman hit a trey to stay within four with three minutes to go in the half. The Falcons stormed their way into the break, with three layups, an old-fashioned three-point play, and make from deep all pouring into a 48-34 advantage after the first 20 minutes.

Notre Dame picked up right where they left off in the second half, knocking down a three in the first 13 seconds, with Baptiste getting Frostburg on the board on a putback make, the first of his opening five points for the team. NDC continued to set the pace, maintaining a 15-point advantage before back-to-back-to-back layups from Baptiste, Day, and Lewis made it 58-46 with 16 minutes on the clock. Baptiste and Lewis each got a bucket to pull within 11, but the Falcons put any hopes of a comeback to bed with 12 unanswered and a 73-50 lead.

Day fed Baptiste for a score then made a jumper of his own, with Notre Dame answering both baskets with makes on the offensive end. A Freeman jumper was followed by Johnson going perfect at the line and the former hitting a trey to bring the deficit under 20. Lewis and Freeman then combined for the next six Bobcat points, followed by buckets from Johnson and Williams and a Freeman free throw for an 87-72 game with two minutes to go. Day and Lewis capped the FSU scoring with a pair of jumpers, as the Falcons ended the night with 14 total threes on their way to the 93-76 final.

Baptiste poured in 22 points, setting a new career-high, to go with 10 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season, as Lewis (14) and Freeman (13) followed him in the scoring column. Day had a fine all-round game with four assists, two steals, and two blocks in the effort.

With the loss, Frostburg falls to 2-23 on the year, while Notre Dame improves to 13-11. FSU returns to the court on Saturday, February 24 where they will host Salem at 4 p.m. inside Bobcat Arena. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
