Men's Lacrosse Staves Off Saints' Second Half Comeback in Road Victory

The Frostburg State Men's Lacrosse team took down D'Youville in an ECC matchup on Saturday afternoon by a score of 14-10.

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Frostburg State Men's Lacrosse team took down D'Youville in an ECC matchup on Saturday afternoon by a score of 14-10.

Frostburg was first on the board within the opening two minutes of the game, as senior Nick Agresta caused a turnover, allowing junior Seamus Kearney to scoop up the ball and feed senior Tyler Dooley 1-0. The Saints tied the game 1-1 minutes later after an FSU turnover. Off the faceoff, junior Alex Walstrum flipped the ball to Kearney to get a touch in the box, as Dooley found senior Austin Sipes for a 2-1 lead. D'Youville was called for a penalty, automatically awarding possession to Frostburg, where on the man-up opportunity, graduate Chase Buckwalter gave the Bobcats a two-goal lead. DYU had a second goal after a won faceoff and successful clear attempt before Buckwalter and Sipes traded goals with the Saints, seeing the score at 5-3 with five minutes to play in the first. After three scoreless minutes, a caused turnover by sophomore Hayden McCullough resulted in a goal by senior Brady Crumbacker, assisted by graduate Bubba Love. A faceoff win and goal by D'Youville kept the score within two, but just before the clock ran out, Love found graduate Owen McCallum for a 7-4 advantage going into the second.

After being awarded possession off a faceoff violation, Frostburg got their eighth score as Love put one in the back of the net for a four-goal advantage. McCullough scooped up the ball after the initial faceoff, allowing FSU to have another offensive opportunity. After a few wide shots, McCallum scored his second for a 9-4 edge. D'Youville was able to get on the board in the fifth minute of the quarter to pull within four, as both teams went scoreless for the coming nine minutes, with junior Nate Jones and the DYC keeper making important saves. With ten seconds left, Sipes ripped one from the top of the crease, giving FSU a five-goal lead going into halftime.

There was a six-minute scoring drought to start the third, featuring penalties, failed clears and missed shots. D'Youville stopped the dry spell, scoring back-to-back goals to get within 10-7. Sipes and Buckwalter answered back with goals of their own, one right after the other to go back up by five. Two more goals were scored during the period, both had by the Saints, as they hung around to make it a 12-9 game going to the final frame.

A penalty at the end of the third carried over into the fourth, giving D'Youville possession and a man-up opportunity, to which they capitalized on the chance, scoring their tenth goal making it a two-goal game at 12-10. Gradate Evan Dere earned a faceoff win, with sophomore Christian Killoran picking up the ground ball, though the resulting shot was saved. A failed clear attempt, however, found the ball in the stick of McCallum, who passed to Dooley to feed Sipes for his fifth goal of the game and a 13-10 leg up. Under five to play, McCallum put away the final goal of the game at 14-10, as the FSU defense and freshman goalie Lukasz Barmosz kept DYU's scoreless for the final few minutes.

Sipes led FSU in goals with five, followed by Buckwalter and McCallum each with three and three other Bobcats with one. Dooley earned the most assists with four with Love right after him at three. Kearney led the defensive effort with a pair of caused turnovers and four groundballs, as McCullough had the most in the latter category with six.

With the conclusion of today's match-up, Frostburg moves to an overall record of 11-3 and a conference record of 4-1, while D'Youville falls to an overall record of 2-13 and a conference record of 1-4. Frostburg is back in action on Saturday, April 27 as they take on the District of Columbia in an ECC game starting at 1pm, where it will be Senior Day in Bobcat Stadium.
