Seven Record Hat Tricks in Men's Lacrosse Senior Day Victory Over Firebirds

The 14th-ranked Frostburg State Men's Lacrosse team concluded their regular season with a commanding 30-1 victory over District of Columbia Saturday afternoon.

FROSTBURG, Md. – The 14th-ranked Frostburg State Men's Lacrosse team concluded their regular season with a commanding 30-1 victory over District of Columbia Saturday afternoon.
 
Prior to the game, FSU honored several players as they round out their careers in graduates Jashane Uter and Evan Dere, seniors Austin Sipes, Brady Crumbacker, Parker Masters, Nick Agresta, Luke McCullough, and Tyler Dooley, and junior Ryan Tyler.
 
Just over a minute in, having already tested UDC's keeper a couple times, the Bobcats found the back of the net with Sipes feeding Dooley for the opening score. Frostburg was then able to withstand a man-down situation, coming out of it with Dooley getting a solo goal. Nearly three minutes went by before scores from Sipes and graduate Chase Buckwalter a minute apart put FSU ahead 4-0. The Bobcat defense came up with a pair of caused turnovers, leading to a graduate connection of Bubba Love finding Owen McCallum at the five-minute mark. Masters then kicked off an offensive flurry to end the final three and a half of the frame, with Love adding a hat trick and assisting Dooley, who also fed Sipes as the lead stood at 11-0 after one.
 
Frostburg's momentum didn't quite carry into the second period, as their first two involvements were a turnover and penalty, but they still were able to keep the Firebirds off the board through the first four minutes. Another sustained attack on UDC's goal resulted in six scores in two and a half minutes, as Sipes bookended a run by junior Blaine Karotko, Buckwalter, McCallum, and Masters for a 17-0 game. Keeping the scoring up, McCullough caused a turnover then turned provider for another McCallum goal, then with just over a minute until the break, freshman Baylor Davis gave FSU a 19-0 lead going into halftime.
 
After a scoreless five minutes to begin the third, the Firebirds got themselves on the board to avoid the shutout with a solo goal at the 9:32 mark. It took nearly eight minutes for the Bobcats to put a tally on their total, as freshman Lukasz Barmosz, the second FSU keeper in the game, made a save while being a man down, to which Buckwalter was able to find another score as the 20th goal of the game. In the final five minutes, Sipes was found by Masters for a goal, then Davis went on back-to-back solo runs and Dooley capped off the period with a 24-1 advantage.
 
Freshman Luke Aspnes joined in on the fun with goals 41 seconds apart off assists from Love and classmate Travis Epps. Seven scoreless minutes proceeded before Davis caused a turnover on a UDC clear, leading to a goal from freshman JT Calhoun, then seven seconds later Masters was found by Aspnes for a 28-1 lead. Davis put the contest away with another pair of goals, as graduate Matt Begley assisted on the first en route to the 30-1 victory.
 
Davis and Sipes each scored a game-high five goals, followed closely by Dooley's four and Love, Masters, Buckwalter, and McCallum each adding three apiece. Sipes and Love tied with a game-high four assists, while junior Landon Bruce led the defensive effort with four caused turnovers and a pair of groundballs. Uter was outstanding in the face-off circle, winning 22-of-26 and picking up a career-high 13 groundballs.
 
With the win, Frostburg improves to 12-3, while UDC falls to 1-11. The Bobcats next will host an ECC Tournament semifinal game on Wednesday, May 1, with the opponent yet to be determined. Information and updates will be posted on frostburgsports.com.
