Men's Soccer Plays Out Goalless Draw with Hilltoppers in Road Match
WEST LIBERTY, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Men's Soccer team came to a 0-0 draw against West Liberty on the road Sunday afternoon.
West Liberty started things on the offensive side, taking the first shot of the game 1:40 in, with graduate Joel Assal earning his first save of the game. The Hilltoppers maintained possession in their offensive half, trying again at goal just over a minute later, but Assal was able to get his hands on the ball, denying WLU once more. Frostburg put together some passes up the field, as junior Laki Psallidas saw a chance at goal, but shot high.
The Hilltoppers continued to apply pressure on offense, attempting three straight shots at goal, with two being blocked and one missing high left. WLU got a little ahead themselves getting called for offside after another missed shot that flew high. FSU received a free kick 25 minutes into the half, allowing the Bobcats to rally down the field, giving sophomore Kevin Garcia-Torres an opportunity at goal, but his shot was blocked. After the ball was battled around for almost the next 20 minutes, with defense stepping up for both teams, junior Alex Retzos broke the ice, firing a shot in the lower left corner of the goal but was stopped by West Liberty goalie Noah Underwood, as the score remained 0-0 after the first half.
Both teams traded fouls and free kicks to open the second, before junior Caleb Dell found himself with a try at goal, ripping a shot from outside the box, but was stopped by WLU. With the Bobcats dominating possession this half, junior Mateo Cuadros ripped another shot at goal for FSU, but put it wide left. At the 60 minute mark of the game, sophomore Carlos Quintero Rivas saw his first try at goal for the day, firing a shot low right, but was stopped by Underwood. The Hilltoppers found themselves with a trio of corner kicks, but were unable to put anything on goal as Frostburg's defense stepped up to keep the match scoreless.
FSU, pushing to get on the board, got called for offside, before West Liberty put a shot high right. Junior Andre Tenorio got in on the offensive action, taking a strike on goal, but was blocked by the Hilltopper defense. With under 15 minutes left in regulation, both teams trades shots, with Psallidas taking another try, missing left. Putting everything into the game, the Bobcats tried for four more shots at goal, with freshman Hugo Portillo taking two, and sophomore Danny Medina and Retzos each firing one, all missing wide, as the game ended in a 0-0 draw.
With the tie, Frostburg goes to 5-8-1 on the season, while WLU moves to 5-3-4. The Bobcats will remain on the road to face West Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday, October 18 at 4 PM. For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
