Men's Soccer Falls Short on Senior Day against Salem

The Frostburg State Men's Soccer team dropped their Senior Day home game to Salem by a score of 1-0 on Saturday evening.

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Men's Soccer team dropped their Senior Day home game to Salem by a score of 1-0 on Saturday evening.

Prior to the game, Frostburg recognized seniors Joel Assal, Bryce Costello, Alex Grasso, Andre Tenorio, Scott Fernandez, and Gage Adam for their time in a Bobcat uniform.

Salem kicked off to start the game, with FSU earning a free kick shortly after, which allowed the Bobcat offense to get the ball into the box. Sophomore Kevin Garcia-Torres took the first shot of the day, but sent it wide to the low left corner. Salem's goal kick resulted in action in their offensive eighteen, as FSU's defense managed to get the ball back to midfield, which landed at the foot of Rodrigo Ramirez, who took a long shot which was saved by junior Brennan Moore, just out past the goal line. A corner kick was awarded to the Tigers as the short kick found the foot of David Teruel Nuno, who then fed Ionut Rares Gaspar into the box, resulting in a 1-0 Salem lead just over 11 minutes into play.

Frostburg quickly looked to tie the game, passing the ball around the Tigers defense and earning their first corner kick of the game. Junior Mateo Cuadros took a shot on goal high left but was denied by Salem goalie Ryan Schneider. Off the punt, the Bobcats found the ball at their feet, while Salem was credited with a yellow card. FSU was awarded a free kick, but the Tigers were able to defend it and get the ball out of their red zone. Halfway through the first, FSU saw back-to-back-to-back shots by Tenorio, who hit the post, junior Alex Retzos, who missed slightly wide, and Garcia-Torres, who was denied by Schneider.  For the remaining minutes of the half, the ball was kicked around through midfield by the respective teams, with Salem keeping their 1-0 lead heading into the break.

The ball started at the foot of FSU, as within two minutes of the half Retzos took a shot on goal which was blocked, but resulted in an FSU throw in. The ball went back-and-forth between the two teams for the next six minutes, until Tenorio found the ball and took a shot at goal. The ball was blocked but settled down by junior Laki Psallidas, who took a chance at goal, but came up empty. The Bobcats held the ball in their offensive half for most of the next few minutes, with Cuadros firing another try on target but was denied by the Tigers defense.  As the clock ticked down, both teams struggled to put together an offensive try, with Salem taking the lone shot of the last 25 minutes of regulation, as Frostburg fell with a final of 1-0.

With the conclusion of today's game, FSU falls to an overall record of 5-10-1, while Salem moves to an overall record of 2-10-3. The Bobcats are back in action on Wednesday, October 25 at 7:30 PM as they host Wheeling for their home finale. For more information visit frostburgsports.com.
