Quintero Rivas Ties Single Game Goal Record in Win Over Cardinals

Sophomore Carlos Quintero Rivas knocked in four goals as the Frostburg State Men's Soccer team defeated Wheeling in their home finale on Wednesday evening by a final score of 4-2.

FROSTBURG, Md. – Sophomore Carlos Quintero Rivas knocked in four goals as the Frostburg State Men's Soccer team defeated Wheeling in their home finale on Wednesday evening by a final score of 4-2.

After a couple fouls were exchanged by both teams to open play, Frostburg fired three straight shots from sophomore Kevin Garcia-Torres, Quintero Rivas, and junior Laki Psallidas, all off target.  After an offside call on the Bobcats, Wheeling took the ball down into their offensive half, taking their first attempt at goal, but missing wide.  Around 18 minutes into the game, Quintero Rivas slipped the ball past Cardinal keeper Aaron Austin for a 1-0 FSU lead.  Just about eight minutes later, Frostburg put together a perfect sequence, as a smooth passing movement found junior Mateo Cuadros dished the ball to Quintero Rivas, one touching the ball into the goal for a 2-0 advantage.

Wheeling attempted to get on the board taking back-to-back shots, one being saved by junior Brennan Moore.  The Cardinals continued to dominate possession in their offensive half, earning three straight corner kicks, setting themselves up for a shot that went wide.  FSU was able to regain possession, taking the ball down the field and setting Quintero Rivas up once more, where he found the back of the net for a 3-0 lead and a hat-trick with under 13 minutes left in the half.

Sophomore Anthony Ibarra took a shot at goal, sending it over top, swapping a shot with Wheeling, before a foul in the box would set the Cardinals up for successful penalty kick and a 3-1 game.  Wheeling fired one more attempt at goal, then graduate Alex Flores ripped his first shot at goal, both missing out left, as the game remained 3-1 heading into the break.

FSU continued their dominance on offense, with Ibarra taking the first shot of the second half.  The Cardinals would then set themselves up with four straight shots, three off target and one being saved by Moore.  Both teams proceeded to trade two shots each, both trying to add to their score.  The Bobcats maintained possession, keeping the ball for two more shots from Garcia-Torres and Cuadros, both off swaying off target.  After the ball was batted around for a few minutes, junior Quincy Bowens found Quintero Rivas in the box for his fourth goal of the night, tying the program record for most goals scored in a game.

Flores tried to keep the momentum going for Frostburg, firing a shot at goal that was saved by Austin, and going for the rebound but missing wide left.  Wheeling regained possession down field where they were able to slice the ball into the back of the net for a 4-2 game with under eight minutes left in regulation.  Frostburg fired three more tries at goal, one from Bowens and two from senior Gage Adam, while the Cardinals tried one more time at goal, as the game ended 4-2 in favor of FSU.

Quintero Rivas' goals were the most scored in a game for the Bobcats since former standout Gregg Laskow also scored four against Mount Aloysius in 2007.

With the win, Frostburg moves to 6-10-1 on the season, while Wheeling drops to 1-12-2.  The Bobcats will travel to face Charleston (WV) in their season finale on Sunday, October 29 at 4 PM.  For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
