Men's Soccer Drops Road Match to Davis & Elkins
ELKINS, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Men's Soccer team fell to Davis & Elkins on Wednesday evening by a final score of 3-0.
D&E quickly got things rolling on offense, taking the ball into their offensive half off the kickoff, earning themselves a corner kick that led to the first shot of the game just 20 seconds in. The Senators continued their pressure, firing shots left and right, as graduate Joel Assal made his first save of the game just under five minutes in.
Frostburg finally was able to turn things around, dominating on their own offensive half, with sophomores Kevin Garcia-Torres and Carlos Quintero Rivas ripping tries at goal. After some back and forth play, the Senators attempted two more shots at goal, while junior Alex Retzos tried from afar but missed high. Both teams got a little chippy fighting for possession, as each team earned a yellow card. Off a few fouls then exchanged by both teams, senior Bryce Costello fired away, missing wide left, and junior Laki Psallidas took his first two shots of the game, one being saved and one missing wide right.
With just over 10 minutes left in the half, D&E finally got one to go, powering the ball into the lower left corner for a 1-0 lead. Retzos tried to tie things up around 6 minutes later, but saw his shot blocked. Junior Andre Tenorio fired as well with just over two minutes left in the half, but was stopped by keeper Grant Wyles, as the Senators kept the 1-0 advantage heading into the break.
D&E looked to retain the momentum they opened the game with, taking the first shot of the second half. With the ball traveling down to the Bobcats offensive half, Costello sliced a ball at goal but missed wide left. With both teams battling to maintain possession and put together a try at goal, the ball was battled around for over nine minutes. Assal came up with another save about 25 minutes into the half, keeping the game at 1-0.
Senior Alex Grasso found the opportunity at goal, taking his first shot of the game, putting the ball wide right. Retzos followed with another shot of his own, this time being stopped by Wyles. With around 10 minutes left, the Senators were able to add to their lead, putting one in the low right corner, for a 2-0 game. The Senators put the game to bed and tacked on another goal not even two minutes later, jumping out to a 3-0 lead with nine minutes left in regulation. The Bobcats tried everything they could to get on the board with the time remaining, but were unable to get anything going on offense, dropping the contest 3-0.
