Chapple Pitches Shutout in Game Two as Softball Splits with Concord

The Frostburg State Softball team split their doubleheader with the Concord Mountain Lions on Saturday afternoon, dropping the first game 3-0 and securing game two 2-0.

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Frostburg State Softball team split their doubleheader with the Concord Mountain Lions on Saturday afternoon, dropping the first game 3-0 and securing game two 2-0.

Frostburg started at the plate but only saw the first three batters, as senior Jamie Roberts took the mound to start game one. Concord was able to get two hits in their first appearance at the plate, placing runners on first and second. A long double to right field sent both runners home giving the Mountain Lions an early 2-0 lead. A walk and a hit for FSU left two on in the top of the second, as CU was able to get out of a jam to stay in the lead. The Mountain Lions loaded the bases in their offensive half of the second, as Roberts stranded all runners on base to get out of the inning with no damage.

Concord's defense dealt three outs to put themselves back at-bat, as CU knocked a hit but Roberts struck out the last two batters to send the game to the fourth. Roberts recorded a single in her at-bat of the inning, but was called out on a fielder's choice by sophomore Arden Miller. Miller was then caught stealing before juniors Cristina Sommerkamp and Hanna Binek connected on back-to-back singles, both being left on base.  A fly out and Robert's securing two more strikeouts from the circle kept the score at 2-0 heading into the fifth, as three up, three down sent the game to the sixth.

Sophomore Gracie Nelson saw her first hit of the day singling up the middle to lead off the sixth inning, as Roberts then reached on a fielder's choice. Sommerkamp then knotted another single, moving pinch runner senior Katie Chapple to second, but both were left on base. Roberts gave up two hits, but stranded two on base to send Frostburg into their last chance at-bats down 3-0, as the Mountain Lions snuck a run off a throwing error by Frostburg.  FSU only saw three batters in the top of the seventh,  dropping the game 3-0.

Roberts connected on the first hit of game two, ripping a single to first but was left on base. Chapple, on the mound for the Bobcats in game two, faced the minimum number of batters, collecting three quick outs.  The second inning saw three up, three down, as FSU got some movement in the third with junior Samara Funk getting to first after being hit by a pitch and proceeding to steal second. With two outs, a single from Nelson moved Funk to third, as with runners on the corners, both Funk and Nelson tried to steal a base but Funk was called out at home. CU recorded two hits in the bottom half of the third, but Chapple stranded both runners to leave the game scoreless heading into the fourth.

Frostburg got on the board in the top half of the fourth, as a home run from sophomore Ashlynn Routzahn put FSU on top 1-0. Chapple continued to dominate from the circle, facing the minimum amount of batters once more in the Mountain Lions offensive half of the inning.  Funk doubled down the line to get things going in the fifth, as a hard-hit single from Roberts sent Funk across home plate for a 2-0 score.  Chapple once again sat Concord down in order, as Frostburg only showed three batters in their at-bats of the sixth.  The Mountain Lions knocked one hit in their look at offense in the sixth, with Chapple stranding the runner on base.  FSU put one runner on in the top of the seventh, as CU collected two hits in their last chance at-bats, with Chapple stranding a runner on base to capture the 2-0 shutout win.

Roberts led the day offensively for FSU, recording three hits and one RBI, as Nelson, Binek, and Sommerkamp each collected a pair of hits.  With the win in game two, Chapple earned her second win of the season, throwing her first complete game of the season as well.  Chapple gave up five hits, no runs, and no walks, while striking out two, as Roberts picked up four strikeouts in game one.

With the split, Frostburg's overall record stands at 21-14 with a conference record of 12-4, as Concord's overall record now reads 22-18 with their conference record sitting at 10-10. Frostburg is back in action on Sunday, April 14 as they take on Glenville State in another road MEC doubleheader starting at 1 PM. For more information, visit frostburgsports.com.
