Top of Lineup, Pitching Staff Carry Baseball to Upset Series Win Over #8 Warriors
EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – The Frostburg State Baseball team finished their three-game set against #8 East Stroudsburg on Saturday, taking the series with a 5-2 win in game three.
Frostburg continued their success at the plate from the first two games, with senior Mikey Guy hitting a triple down the right field line to bring in senior Doyle McNew for an early 1-0 lead. With the quick lead, FSU would hand the ball to senior starter Patrick Bauer, who had a quick first facing the minimum. The Bobcats added a run to their lead in the second and third innings, with RBI from junior Kade Abrisz and Guy, allowing Frostburg to lead 3-0 after the top of the third.
Bauer would face his first trouble in the third with the Warriors getting two across the plate for a 3-2 game. FSU answered right back in the top of the fourth, with sophomore Jackson Schalick hitting a two out triple to left center, before being knocked in by sophomore Ryan Bouma on a RBI single. ESU then left two stranded in the bottom of the fourth, keep the score 4-2 in favor of Frostburg.
The Bobcats added an insurance run in the top of the fifth, when redshirt junior Ben Wieman scored off a single to right from Bouma to sit the game at 5-2. With a three-run lead, Bauer would keep the Warriors for two more innings before handing things off to the bullpen. Junior Joe Pippin took care of the eighth inning, giving way to sophomore Bryce Hendricks in the ninth, as Hendricks faced the minimum, striking out two and picking up his first save of the year in the 5-2 Frostburg win.
FSU finished with nine hits on the day, with three of them coming from Guy, as Guy and Bouma were credited with two RBI each. Bauer recorded the win for his second of the year, pitching seven solid innings, giving up just five hits and two runs while striking out five.
After taking two of three from the Warriors, Frostburg moves to a record of 8-3 on the season, while East Stroudsburg goes to 11-2. The Bobcats will take the momentum into conference play, with a Saturday, March 15 and Sunday, March 16 road trip to Concord and Glenville with doubleheaders set for 1 PM .
