Glenville State Holds Off Women's Basketball in Overtime Thriller
FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State women's basketball team lost in overtime to Glenville State. The Pioneers won 94-93 in a back-and-forth matchup with 19 lead changes.
The Bobcats came out hot, scoring the first three baskets for a quick 6-0 lead from sophomore Julie Spinelli and junior Jenna Muha while holding GSU scoreless for nearly three minutes. Glenville settled in and took their first lead 9-8 after a made three at the midway point of the period. Muha knocked down a pair of free throws to put FSU back in the lead before sophomore Laekyn Flinn hit a triple to go up by four. After a Pioneer layup, redshirt sophomore Mandy Roman had a old-fashioned three-point play, with the visitors answering on a pair of freebies and a three before freshman Zaria Gaskins found Muha down low to give the Bobcats the last bucket of the first and an 18-16 advantage.
In similar fashion to the first, FSU kept Glenville off the board for the first three minutes of the second while growing their lead to nine through a pair of Spinelli lay-ins and another by Muha. Over the next two minutes, the sides traded scores back-and-forth, as redshirt freshman Sophie Nichols and sophomore Ayla Hileman knocked down a pair of threes for their first points of the game to make it a 33-27 game with five minutes to go. Spinelli then got to the line while Gaskins had a steal-and-score to stay at arms' length, then sophomore Sydney Snyder hit a three off the bench and Flinn followed at the stripe to take a 42-32 lead. The Pioneers caught fire in the last two minutes, taking advantage of five Bobcat turnovers and scoring nine consecutive points to get within one going into half at 42-41.
The third quarter began with the sides again matching each other, as Muha and Hileman had buckets while GSU got to the line and knocked in a trey for a 46-46 tie. Spinelli continued to drive the offense with a pair at the line and a lay-in off Nichols' assist, then was found by Roman for three and Muha on another layup to lead 55-51. Muha and Roman then both added scores, however the Pioneers hit a pair at the rim and a three to pull within 59-58 with four minutes on the clock. The teams could barely be separated from that point, with neither side leading by more than two, with Spinelli hitting a pair of jumpers and a layup while Hileman knocked in another from deep, however a last-second Glenville bucket gave them a narrow 69-68 advantage.
GSU would start the fourth strong, scoring the first three baskets in pushing out to a seven-point lead before a layup from Muha made the game 75-70. It took over two minutes for either side to find the net again, as the Pioneers hit a three to go up by eight, however Muha converted at the line and Gaskins hit a mid-range floater to stay within four. Neither team could take much momentum, as Glenville went four-of-four at the stripe while Gaskins found Muha under the rim and Hileman knocked in free throws of her own. Trailing by six with 1:38 to play. Gaskins would hit Hileman for a three, who in turn found Spinelli for a layup to get FSU within one with 30 seconds to go. The Pioneers had a pair of chances to try and close the game out, however they only went one-for-four at the line, allowing Spinelli to get fouled and make both shots with 18 seconds to go, tying things up 85-85. Out of a GSU timeout, Nylah Davis was able to drive the lane and score with just 0.9 seconds left, looking to come away with the win. FSU had other ideas, as on the next inbounds, Spinelli was fouled and kept her nerve, sending the game into overtime at 87-87.
Both teams missed their first pair of shots in the extra period, as Spinelli got things started by splitting a trip to the line 90 seconds in. After Glenville responded, Flinn hit a jumper before Hileman answered a Pioneer three with one of her own to put FSU up 93-92 with two minutes to play. Over the next minute-and-a-half, the sides weren't able to capitalize on offense, with GSU missing a layup and a three while the Bobcats missed a jumper and two at the line. With 27 seconds to play to go, Stevi Yancy got into the paint and finished to move up 94-93. FSU had two shots at retaking the lead, however a driving layup came up short while they couldn't get another shot off after an offensive rebound and turnover, ending things with Glenville coming out ahead 94-93.
Spinelli led the Bobcats with a career-high 33 points to go with nine rebounds and three steals. Muha had a double-double on 22 points and 13 rebounds, while Hileman joined them in double figures with 16 points and a career-high seven assists, with Gaskins leading all players on a personal best eight.
With the loss, Frostburg is now 4-6 overall and 1-3 in Mountain East Conference play, while Glenville is now 6-2 and 3-1 in the MEC. The Bobcats will host Charleston (WV) on Thursday, December 18 with a 5:30 PM tipoff. For more information, please visit frostburgsports.com.
